I searched under Peterskill, Peterkill, Peters Kill and Peter Kill and I know someone posted it recently....but I recall someone mentioning the date for when Peterskill opens to climbers for the season (or did I dream this?).

I even called Mohonk to get redirected to Minnewaska.

And I apologize to all those who listed this under posts none of us EVER want to see again!!!

Thanks!

Call the main # for Minnewaska (State Park). They can tell you what you need to know.

If you were even able to get a direct # for PK, (which I'm not even sure there is one, period), then it likely went unanswered since, it is CLOSED now and nobody's there.

AND, there's no ice on the cliffs. Spoke with them today about that very thing...

They're expecting to be open next weekend, but they suggested that I call midweek next week to find out for sure.

The number is HERE.

I was looking at the route finder, and it lists routes at Peterskill. Does one of the Williams guides show routes there?

I have small thin book they sell at R&S, but I don't remember it listing nearly as many routes as the route finder has.

I have that same book, and all of the climbs listed in it are in the routefinder database.

In addition, there are a few climbs listed HERE that aren't in the routefinder database, but are in my guidebook - thanks to a certain member of Team Ahhhh-Kersplat.

Do you have the old guide (tan cover) or the new one that came out last year (I think it was last year) - the new one has more routes in it.

It's white, think I got it in 2001 or maybe early 2002. Haven't seen it since then.

The route finder says the routes are from Williams black books, so I was just wondering if one of his books had PK routes. And there seemed to be more than I remember, but well it has been two years. Guess I'll go dig through boxes and look for the current guide if has all (or most) of the routes.

Sounds like you have the old guide... always something new to buy. I think I bought mine in the Deli.

I have the new blue covered one that I bought late last year at R&S. But I did notice the Williams' references in the Route Finder and that the Route Finder seems to have more routes listed. Curious. It seems a combination of the book and the Finder would yield a great resource (and probably an increase in traffic at PK).

So warm out today! Wish I was not in an office!

And if you're lucky maybe the staff will come along shortly afterwards to open up.

Not quite what I mean.

No, you can't get in before 9. However, I've come close to being locked out due to the access limitations by getting there around 9:30-10. *shrug*

have many people been turned away because of a lack of climbing permits? so far, i've been lucky, and have never been turned away.

I haven't been turned away since I'm there early, but a few weekends I've seen the "no permits available" sign when I'm leaving.

I've been lucky as well, apparently, and have never been turned away. It was commented on a couple of times, though, that it was close.

And I might be wrong, but I thought it was "permits" period, not "climbing permits".

*shrug* Just get there closer to nine than later.

I'm pretty sure the sign at the gate says "climbing permits available" and when they fill up they hang a "no" sign over it.

Peter's Kill is open for climbing. So, have at it, boys and girls!

Apparently there was some rock fall in the area of the Oops Wall/Crazy crack area and as a precautionary measure, this area is closed to climbers for the time being.

Surprisingly, everything was good, dry, and fun on saturday.

Although in classic Palisades state park fasion they used natural looking super glow in the dark yellow police tape in 300' sections to rope off the rock fall area.

Oh ML btw, Golden Dreams is still harder then Ants line

Thats a bitch.
Oops is a cool lead.
Did they tape it off cuz they're worried more stuff will fall outa the sky?
Does it look like it will?
Or are they just using it as an excuse to shut out us poor climbers from some more cliffspace?

Well with the natural rate of Gunks rock decay (sans climbers puling on it) we should be clear of the lose stuff by the year 4560

hmm tough call on that one. i think ants line is a way better climb. more varied. and you can't really lay back the entire thing like you can golden dream

so i would have to agree with Mr. Law on this one and say Ants line is the more difficult of the two.

maybe your small arms make laybacking harder?

Crackboy,
1st off congrats, you spelled every word in you last post......well....um.....correct

Ya, musta been me small hands or maybe it could have been the large black and blue knuckles from that silly ice, you remember that don't ya? Now that your in CA you probably don't like to get your hands wet, so I'm sure that sport is out the question now

though when i was still back east and climbing ice more regualrly, at least more than out here, i never once had bruised hands/fingers...its the subtle things like technique

though i actually have plans to do shasta next month, not sure what route yet

ps:

Given the quickness with which PK staff have invoked THE MASTER PLAN <genuflect> when asked about climbing elsewhere in the park, I wonder...is there provision in TMP <genuflect> for nesting closures to accomodate non-threatened species??

The birds are pretty special I guess, as the closed area encompasses roughly 25% of the published routes at Peters Kill.

I showed up on Saturday around 12:30pm to grab one of the last 10 passes at Peter's Kill and take my first tour of the place, guide book in hand.

My overall view was prety favorable. Though it was crowded, there was plenty to choose from. And for me, with only one lead last year after starting to lead the year before, it was just the kind of climbing I needed to get back on the sharp end.

My favorite was the Captain's Log. A simple, straight forward 5.4g that made me feel pretty good. Then I set up a top-rope and climbed 4 variations of the Kling-On (5.7). I also played around on the bunk bed wall (after leading sleepwalking @ .3g). Good place to get some climbing in with relative peace and quiet. And the view from the very top is nice.

Heading back again as soon as I can!

Oh, and the trapps lot was full when I drove by....crammed!

(and all I can add to the thread about the Oops wall is that it is definitely closed).
