Does anybody know anything about climbing areas around Austin, Texas? I heard there's a place called Enchanted Rock? Anybody been there? What's the quality of the climbing? Also, if anybody's lived in Austin, I'd appreciate hearing how you liked living there.

Lisa,
Rock and Ice sept/oct94 #63 has an article on Texas.
which includes Austin. Which Incidently also has a great Gunks article. I seem to remember a more recent issue too.(but could not remember) I have never climbed in Austin, but I know the club scene(live music) is one of the best in the country. I think you have to wear a ten gallon hat and cowboy boots when you climb tho.(State Law)

Lisa - The climbing in the Austin area is good and lots of fun. Closest to Austin is the Greenbelt - lots of limestone sport routes, all pretty short (less than 50 feet). There is also Reimer's Ranch - again lots of shortlimestone sport routes. Enchanted Rock (E-Rock) is about 1 1/2hours northwest of Austin in Fredericksburg. It is a great place to climb. Everything from friction routes to beautiful crack. Some are bolted others are not. The rock is pink granite. Camping is available in the park - be sure to call ahead for reservations.

Austin is a great place to live. It's a college town and there is always something going on from football games to live music and outdoor festivals. People in Austin are very laid back and friendly.

If you need more information on climbing in Austin just stop by the Whole Earth Company in downtown Austin,or the REI store, or you can email me at mcquic@tcwgroup.com.
