Mapquest is telling me 8:47 (527 mi) from Brooklyn. I'm thinking that's a conservative time. Would like to hear from folks who've made the drive from the Tri-State area. How long does it really take to get there?

that sounds about right to me. it took us about that long from central jersey when i went, but we got lost a bit looking for roads and campgrounds down at the gorge so scratch off like 45-1hr but you would add that on to get fro brooklyn to central jersey anyway

From SJ it takes almost 8, when you finally factor in the traffic around DC. Depends when you do it though. Leaving at night, going through Carlisle, PA and then down 81 is the other alternative, but you are stuck on the PA Turnpike then. Otherwise it's I95 and the beltway! It is actually faster to go down to Beckley (60)and then head up, saves you tooling along a 2 lane road.

I'm looking 78 to 81, through Harrisburg, then 68 (I think) toward Beckley. Hope to time departure (Fri) to avoid rush hour both in NYC and in Harrisburg.

When you get onto 19, especially thru Summersville, DO NOT SPEED! When they say 50 mph they don't mean 52, they mean 50. It is one of the countries biggest speed traps. When I was down there about a month ago we saw at least three cars pulled over....and that was at 230AM!

The locals will warn you about it too.

Have a fun trip....and it is about 6 to 6.5 from Philadelphia

On your way there watch out for construction on 78 W in PA between exits 49 and 40. If you see signs of backed up traffic avoid by:

Get off at exit 49B, get on Hwy 100, North. Left at 1st stop light onto Main St. (Old Rt. 22), stay on that for 9 or 10 miles till Krumsville Rd, make a left on that and after half a mile get back onto 78 West again.

Oh yeah, and watch out for the Summersville cops and Fayettville cops.

This is the way I go and when I leave from central NJ it has taken me between 7 and 8 hours. Usually closer to 7 but I've gotten stuck in traffic sometimes and then it's more like 8. Good luck and have fun!

Just to reiterate: Don't speed! Seriously. You will get nailed on 19.

And don't get on the DC beltway. The PA turnpike is a much better alternative. The beltway and I-66 could take you as much as 4 hours alone.

thanks for the info, everyone. decided to bail on plans to head down there this weekend. fucking gas is too expensive and I couldn't justify it for two days of climbing (which bums me out because the forecast looks fantastic for this weekend down there). Gonna take next Thu/Fri off instead and spend 4 days in the Gunks (assuming it stops fucking raining).
