Climbing at the Nears on Saturday, we noticed a couple of places on the cliff that have some letters painted on them, in day-glo orange. Like the sort of markings you see on the sidewalk when Con Ed has to come in and excavate.....

We saw two of these. A "P," then a vertical line, and then an "L."

Anyone know what thses are? Like I said, it looks like some sort of work crew symbols, not vandalism byt kids or anything. I thought it was strange to mark the cliff with what looks like indelible spray paint..... Maybe the letters stand for "Power Lines"?

maybe....

There were two that we saw, so maybe they are the boundaries for one tract of land..... I can't recall exact location but I would say about 1/4 way down the trail from the hwy was the first one, and the second was maybe about 1/2 way through the trail...

But still - spray painting ON the cliff?

That's pretty, umm....well....this thread should heat up in a day or so, I'm thinking....

Might you have asked a ranger?

These are survey marks which are supposed to represent property lines. There was an old thread on this issue, but it seems to have expired.

Old news basically.

Mountain lions are known to mark their territory. Check for the smell of urine.

Observe behavior of dogs. They often will detect before humans.

Yea. P/L is property line.
The paint surveyors use is water based. It will go away.

Thank you for the info. I hadn't noticed the marks last time I was out(week before T/Giving day), and hadn't seen it discussed before. Had I seen a ranger, I would have, of course, asked. My inquiry was just an innocent inquiry, so Pedestrian - please accept my apologies in advance if you will have to suffer undue drama within your day. And thanks for the lovely private note.

Funny that an orange P/L was there last fall. I suspect this one is not washing off.

I first noticed it around the time Kent threatened that the local landowners were going to post No Climbing notices on the private part of Near Trapps. I assumed it was simply marking the spot where the signs would go.

Those marks indicate which portions of the cliff will be blasted away to make way for the highway that will run from New Paltz to the proposed Indian Casino in Ellenville.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the GCC has a steering committee scheduled regarding the painting and maintaining the “Don’t Climb Here While the Nears is Being Blasted Away” signs.
