Anyone using one as their primary rope? (or doubles)

Is there a downside?

With the slimmer ropes, excessive weight is no longer an issue. [9.7x70=61g/m; 10.2x60=64 g/m] Does the extra 10m create rope management problems? Is the extra 10m a noticable benefit?

You can TR some ridiculous things with a 70M rope. Don't do it.

An increasing number of sport climbs in europe and canada are being designed for 70 meter ropes.

top roping on them is fine, it really isn't a big deal.

my next rope will probably be a 70.

A skinny 70 and a skinny fifty are a super awesome combo sometimes...traverse pitch? 50. Long pitch? 70. Plus you can rap standard 60M bolts/anchors...

Scenario: Leader leads up Maria Direct and P2 + 3 of Maria. Given rope stretch the second better be solid at climbing 9’s since he will be unprotected for the 1st 20 feet or so depending on how much he weighs.

Ok TR off of the top of P2 of Maria, rope stretch is more or less the same. Better, since you can actually watch you partner crater into the ground.

I think what your trying to say is that TR’ing is fine with 70’s (technically)

well, i've done plenty of tr'ing with two sixties tied together, and a single 70 meter strand is going to have a hell of a lot less bouncy slack than that. Besides, tr'ing is just training for leading, right? and the leader never falls!

It's handy. I've done some 60m/70m double rope raps, and having the extra 10m meant getting to the ground rather than downclimbing. Not necessary perhaps, but really handy. Helpful if you can't downclimb because there's a party on the only good line.

Easy to use the rope as an anchor, can anchor into things far back from the edge.

If an end gets damaged you can cut off up to 30' and still have a usable rope.

I think they have advantages, especially for ice so that I can just keep going. Sport climbing with a 70m would also be nice in some venues. I wouldn't want to use one as my primary rope though. I like slighter fatter single ropes (in the range of 10 mil, which used to be skinny but now isn't) than what some people take as the norm these days. I think they're more durable. So i don't want the hassle and extra weight of always lugging around a 70m rope. I have enough trouble with rope management with a 60!!
