So I guess the purple number in parentheses in the "Posts" column in the main forum view is the number of new/unread posts since your last visit. This seems to be a little buggy, with the numbers sometimes appearing randomly or when I know I've read the posts. Clicking into the forum and then clicking back out/refreshing seems to get them to show appropriately... EXCEPT... for whatever reason, I seem to cosntantly be showing 14 new posts in the Trail Running forum that aren't going away no matter how many times I read the forum???

There are posts I've read, and every time I go back into Gunks.com, it shows the forum as having unread messages, and I waste time going into there only to see it's all stuff I've read already. This happens often. Even if I refresh and the post shows up as read, the next time I login to gunks.com, it's marked unread again.

I've been going by the presence/absence of the grey bar over posts/forums that contain unread messages. This still seems to work.

That's exactly what doesn't always work. Can't seem to determine why it works sometimes and not others. But I have gone into forums and realized I was re-reading posts with the grey bar that I've already read.

It only happened to me when I had the "remember me with a cookie so next time I don't have to log in" turned on.

Janette, do you use the "back" button to navigate out of a forum, or one of the "Index" buttons on the site? It seems to me that going "back" doesn't set the cookie to set the thread as "read", while using one of the navigation buttons within the forum/site does set the thread or post as "read".

that's not working for me...i'm getting more unread posts than ever, but not in every forum. it's really weird.

Yeah - it has been failing to work for me since the new forum, too.

This bug - the one that doesn't correctly update or remember the number of unread posts indicator - is easily the most annoying of any of the bugs here, on rc.com, supertaco, or anywhere else for that matter!!!!

It needs to be a priority fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think it's a bug, to enable reloading pages when you hit the "back" button requires dynamic web pages and setting the no-cache setting in the headers. Don't think UBB can do it.

I like the static back/forward navigation, when I click back, I want to see exactly where I came from, unchanged. If I want to update the count I'll click reload or go to the main index.

No, it's a real bug. I've never used the back button here since I figured it out on the old site; but ever since the software change, the unread-post counts have never been right.

And Marc's right - it's way annoying.

One thing you might want to try is resetting your cookie. You can do this on the "myHome" screen. There's now a "maintenance" section that appears beneath the "Display Preferences..." section. Let me know if this helps.

The new (major) revision of this software (UBBThreads) is currently in Beta 3 testing and should be ready by September. I believe that the new version will address this, and countless other issues with the software.
