Has anyone done any climbing in Glacier National Park? I'll be there later this summer for a week-long backpacking trip and am looking for some moderate routes to do (up to 5.7) that I can haul my gear up. Any info?

There really isn't any *good* rock climbing in the park, according to some guide books that I have checked out. The rock isn't the greatest of quality. however, there are plenty of peaks to be climbed. I'm gonna be spending my summer on flathead lake, just outside the park. If you're interested, we could try to meet up and do something.

I'm jealous, the Flathead lake area is one of my favorite places anywhere.

You might take a look at this month's Rock and Ice, there's an article on Montana climbing. However, I think I'd remember if there were any in glacier. There might be something mearby though.

The rock is pretty crappy(the hiking is superb); however, there is a climbing guide to Glacier NP. I believe the title is something creative like Climber's Guide to Glacier National Park. Try searching the Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, or Border's databases and you can get the exact reference.

I own Climbers guide to Glacier National Park. WHile it is a great book, the title is VERY deceiving. Think of it as a mountain climbers guide rather than a rock climbers guide. It has very detailed descriptions of routes up almost all of the many peaks in the park. However, most of these don't require a single fifth class move. Good book, but not for rock climbing
