Spoke to an old timer AMC hiker, who told me that the cliffs behind the breakneck lodge, just north of Cold Spring on 9D used to be an AMC haunt for climbing. Is there still, has there been, might there be climbing there?

I believe this was covered in another post, can't remember if it was old board or new. But somebody was saying the climbing on Breakneck is off limits to the public. Which is a shame, legend has it that's where Fritz was climbing when on a clear day he first saw the Gunks.

Guy and Laura Waterman's book Yankee Rock and Ice has a great composite photograph of the Prize Route. You see Fritz at various points along the route all in the same image. Hard to get a better description than that for an old route.

I have hiked to the top in summer and poked around a private residence looking at the ice in winter, but haven't gone after the Prize route yet. Thanks for reminding me.

I think if you browse the Old Posts, you'll find a thread on Storm King or Harriman, or such. They and Breakneck are all NYS Palisades Park land and closed to climbing. BTW, the Poughkeepsie paper had a picture just the other day of an unexploded bomb/mortar round lying in the woods on Storm King. That's been one reason to justify the closure over there. Stepping on one of those would be worse than having the cops confiscate your rack.

I wish the government would be more controlling, it doesn't make enough decisions for me, I feel so lost.

While I do believe it is technically "off limits", I have climbed there without any problems.
I would suggest a weekday, and I would stay off the face above the tunnel.

I have fond memories of being a little kid driving through that tunnel with my grandmother when there were climbers top roping from above. She freaked out thinking that they were trying to attempt suicide.

Anyway, if you park where the old rest. is and hike up the road for just a short while, you can bushwhack left up to the right end of the crag where there are a few easy routes. The stuff on the main face is wayyyy chossy and dangerous.

Not really worth going if you think you might get caught or you are looking for a solid day out and don't live nearby.
The hiking is great though and it is a little bit of history.

Watch the falcon nesting as well.

Cheers,
Christian :?)
