On Saturday, October 21st, join us for a slide show by Eric Hörst at the Mohonk Preserve Visitor's Center, starting at 7:00pm.

After a brief update on exciting projects the Gunks Climbers' Coalition is working on, Eric will present a rock tour of his travels climbing around the world, as well as a primer on Training for Climbing.

Admission is $10, proceeds to the Gunks Climbers' Coaltion. There will also be a raffle.

Eric J. Hörst (pronounced "Hirst"), is the nation's leading authority on climbing performance. An accomplished climber of 29 years, Eric has ascended cliffs all across the United States and Europe. Driven by his passion for adventure and challenge, he has established nearly 500 first ascents, primarily on his home cliffs in the Eastern U.S. Eric's latest book, Learning to Climb Indoors (Falcon), was released on July 1, 2006, while his previous book, Training For Climbing (Falcon 2002), remains a best-seller among climbing books with its breakthrough look into the science of climbing performance and optimal training practices.

A student and teacher of climbing performance, Eric has personally helped train hundreds of climbers, and his training books and concepts have spread around the world to climbers in more than 50 countries. He is widely recognized for his innovative practice methods and training tools, and he has been a training products design consultant for Nicros, Inc. since 1994. Eric has written four books on the subject of climbing performance including Flash Training (Falcon, 1994) and How To Climb 5.12 (Falcon, 1997/2003) all of which have foreign translations. i would rather watch paint dry then seeing photos of him climbing sling time with gear allready fixed. sling time the Eric Horst way sport time

hmm... I dont know if he fixes his gear for hard trad leads or not. If so, that is definitely lame. Regardless the guy definitely knows how to train to climb, whether its trad climbing or sport "climbing." In this light, some might find his slideshow quite interesting.

As an aside, I was out at Red Rocks in March when I ran into him. My buddies and I had decided to take an "easy" day sport climbing at the Gallery after three days of long trad climbs. Coincidently, we ran into Eric and got to chat. He was super nice and he showed his stuff by doing a really solid and smooth flash of Fear and Loathing.

He is super approachable and seems pretty humble, probably more than I would be with a climbing resume and a wife like his.

Being the one that photographed Eric on Sling Time, I can attest that he placed his gear on lead during his onsight of the route. Unfortunately, in the best of the photographs there is a cam that *I* placed to hold myself under the roof. As he approached I had to cut away and left the cam where it was. Eric placed all his own gear going out the roof in the age-old Gunks fashion... climb out, get gear, down climb and rest, except for my one cam.

BTW, talus, follow him up some R-rated fright-fest in Moab before dissing him... Whether it's Eric or anyone else, I mean, what is the value in dissing someone you don't even know like that?

sorry mccallew i should have put "imo" in front of my sentence. but there was more than one piece maybe he was doing multiple laps for good photos.

so after i follow him on 1 R rated route Eric can follow me the rest of the day and night and next day. i'll even breath heavy so Eric doesn't feel like he's the only one tired.

We enjoyed the show on Saturday night, the husband and I. He had bought me Eric's book 'Training for Climbing' a few years ago but I completely forgot to bring it to get it autographed. In the end I won another book of his in the raffle so I asked him to sign that. We were really hoping to snag one of the Cilogear packs though!

Eric describes himself as a 'weekend warrior' and outlined his approach to climbing at the best of one's abilities, even if one only can be a weekend warrior. He outlined his training philosophies in an open, relaxed manner and seems like a nice ordinary guy.

It was a nice prelude to a stellar day of climbing on Sunday.
