Mike,
How soon? Some of the farmers I buy from at the farmer's market are reporting overnight temps in the 20's. We're bitin' at the bit. End of the month?
Best, Kim

After hitting 82 Friday at Seneca, the season would seem a long way off. Thank God for that little micro environ in the Catskills and further north. A friend from Quebec says it is starting to form there.

There was a coating of snow on Giant Ledge / Panther when I hiked it a couple weeks ago. Wild.

Aya, I'm sure I met him, as there were all of 6-8 of us there each day. We were there Tuesday to mid-day Friday so only got in one and a half days, but it was great when the rain cleared. This week/end looks to be a bit cooler!

Hey, the lows are getting lower and the days are getting shorter. It's just a matter of time now. It might be time to bust out the dremel (on all but the screw I let smike use ) and do a pull up or two. I haven't done any since summer camp. Just think, 23A miiight even be open before the ice starts to form on the Rawdon's (formerly Moore's) Bridge climbs.

[weather geek on] A major weather pattern flip by the end of this weekend. Coldest air of the season by far will be in place by mid next week. In fact a major winter snow storm could usher in winter for the Northeast for end of next week. Its very likely that someone in the Northeast is going to get 12 + from this. Snow fall potential for end of next week (Darkest blue would be measured in feet) Forcast map Dec 2 [weather geek /off]

We'll check back next week to see how I did Can't wait until the news media grabs hold of the idea. If they hype it, it will not come true for sure.

About damn time. Last year on Thanksgiving weekend I was already skiing on natural snow all the way to the base of Mount Washington.

I beat ya.
The Minty of Catskill ice climbs got climbed at 10:30 this morning. Yea, OK it was on TR; I'll give you the honor of ringing in the leading (or soloing, as the case may be) season.

It was all legitimate climbing until the last little overhang. I Batmanned over that, as climbing over it would probably have pulled down much of the moss that is oh-so-critical to this section during the season.
Game on!

You trudge up the 400' of talus from the road for that?
Yup. Hey, I bet it's more ice than you've poked this month.
Then I drove to the Trapps and did a lap on Hyjecks and Fingerlocks...in the same boots I ice climbed in! Rigid mountain boots make Hyjeck's a bit more, um, "interesting".

Good Job Mike! I've climbed the REAL Minty of Ice Climbs in leaner conditions than that but that's just because I wanted to one-up Smike. But since you've beaten both of us, I can wait until the conditions are actually worth climbing

So basically, you were dry-tooling after you tapped the sheets of ice out of the way? Looks like a sorry wet way to spend a few hours..............unlike, say, the fun of sending out CVs........OK, never mind, I'm just jealous! Any unemployed folk who need a belay bitch, let me know.......... The still Irish, but soon to be American after my biometric scans get Dept. of Homeland Security clearance......

Last Saturday, my farmer friend in the Union Square market told me each morning he has to break two inches of ice up in the watering troffs for the animals.
Best, Kim

Here comes the cold. After a record high tomorrow the temps are supposed to drop until the high on Sunday is 32, for the champlain valley. There wasn't much winter around this weekend though. My wife and I were able to ride our mountain bikes all the way to the castle at the top of the whiteface memorial highway. There was almost no snow on the ground even at the summit.
