Gas prices in my area of Jersey haven't gone up at all. I bought gas for $1.89 this morning.

I don't know what you people are complaining about. Exhorbitant gas prices are EXACTLY what we need in this country to make us appreciate what we have. I say...make it 5 bucks a gallon. People will learn pretty quickly to buy fuel efficient vehicle sand only drive when necessary. There should like like a 3 or 4 dollar tax on every gallon with that money going directly into environmental research and initiatives

I read last week that the domestic auto manufacturers are so SUV-oriented now that they are, with the current (long overdue!) concern on fuel economy, effectively losing money on every vehicle they sell. Gas at $4-5 a gallon would help put this country on a sounder energy path, but the job losses in Detroit (and their various suppliers) would be staggering. Not that that's a bad thing; we have put US jobs ahead of the interests of the planet for too long.

So...anybody wanna buy my minivan??

Rob, You sound like Pete Townshend. In fact, that's the thesis behind most of his Psychoderelict Album. When you start to sound like Pete Townshend you either a) have to be a prolific song writer and major influencer of pop culture for the past 40 years or b) certifiably insane and escorted around in a straight jacket.

For each one of us that is ringing our hands and worrying about the impact of driving a car that gets 22mpg on the planet there are 150 chinese people manufacturing the things we sit on, the utensils we eat with, and the clothes we wear. And standing on the new side of shanghai looking through the smog a 1/4 mile to the old side and having difficulty distinguishing cars from people leads me to believe they don't care too much...
