Hi There - new to posting on the site, but I've been a regular reader for a while...
Since there are so many varied opinions on things local in here, I thought it'd be a good place for my question:
I've got to choose a propane supplier for my home... Is there one company more reputable/reliable than another? Are they all priced the same?
Thanks for any advice!

I don't know about your area, but in our experience (Dutchess Co.) the price varied tremendously. Shop around and keep an eye on the price. Don't hesitate to bitch a bit if you're being charged too much - most suppliers will knock a couple bucks off the bill to keep your business . It's also cheaper if you use a lot of it, e.g. if you heat with it, as opposed to just, say, running a clothes dryer.

Wish I could tell you which is good, but can only tell you which I’m not too happy with..Suburban Propane. That’s at least the office over in Accord. Were paying about $3.03 per with them to give you something to shop on. They let us and a few others I know that use them run out every now and then. I believe smaller company and local is the way to go.

Thanks, Smike. Yep, I spoke to them and got that price -- Kosko (out of Kingston) is pricing "between" $2.30 - $2.40 dempending on consumtion I guess.... but their first fill-up is about $250 more than Suburban's.
Now's where customer service & reputation factor in

In suburban energy's defense----Two occasions now, my furnace has failed for simple reasons. ONce a pulley on the blower motor was broken and the second time a relay on the glow plugs failed. In both cases, I called S.E. and within 1 hour a guy showed up in a truck and fixed it. if you go "local" "small guy" you better find out about what their service is like- no furnace in January for more than a couple hours BLOWS unless you have a back up wood/coal stove

I've been very happy with Kimlin for propane. I used them when I was in Accord, and I'm still using them in High Falls. They are a small company based in Gardiner, and Mark, the owner is very approachable and has gone out of his way several times for me when we're run out unexpectedly. The only thing they seem to require is that you pay on time. I've made a long term commitment to Kimlin, and I think think he's really honored that by giving me a great rate. I'm paying less than $2.00/gallon, and the rate is pretty much locked in, unless the market make a major shift.

Ditto Evan's post. Mark came by personally three years ago when our tank failed and had to be dug up. As a kind gesture he even had it filled for free after the work was done. "Local" and "small guy" need not connote uneven service or high prices.

Majestic Propane in Gardiner just sold out to Mohonk Oil (also in Gardiner).

Call either them or Kimlin, and see which can give you the better price.
