Madame G's is ok, Shockelys is way overrated as a climbing experience. There are many far more interesting 5.8 and 5.9 climbs in the Gunks than 5.6. I think that the 5.6's are so popular and reverred since they are more attainable by more people.

I agree with you that I think its the attainable factor that makes them revered, but given the .10's in the Gunks, I think the .8's and .9's are just ok, but a greater percentage of people climb them then the .10's.... but I think that they are all easily attainable by the average climber

I've never been anywhere with higher quality easy to moderate well protected trad climbs (such as around 5.6) than at the Gunks. That said, I agree, it seems like that's all the mags focus on for Gunks climbing.

Have to agree that the Gunks has a huge number of high quality well protected moderate climbs. The only other place I can think of off the top of my head that is like this is Lovers Leap but it doesn't have the shear numbers as the Gunks.

I'm not sure about the age of the pictures, as those climbers I know still look the same, but I am told that the bit about Tim hiding under the high-E roof is at least a couple years old. I'm sure this is often the case at a mag but the article seems to pre-date the new ownership.

Did you all notice the picture of Scotty and that his daughter wrote part of the article? Very cool.

I thought that incorporating Scott and his daughter in the article was a great touch, as the gunks do seem to be an increasingly family affair. Hard to not recognise Scott with the beard and I'm sure this will increase his fan base!

I talked with Scotty about the article yesterday. He mentioned that his daughter intended her piece as a father's day gift. That's a nice gesture for a parent.

I'm sure that was a very heart-felt gesture. Scott must have done a fair job as Dad. I hadn't considered that he was unaware of her section before reading the article.
