I'm putting together a set of destinations for the new, national version of the climbing partner database (which will be rolled out shortly after July 4).

I'd like to get a list of the top 50+ or so climbing destinations throughout the continent (NA). I think I've got the obvious ones, but would appreciate some move feedback from you well traveled types.

So what am I missing (I know, a lot)? Here's my list so far (don't worry too much about the regions, I can change them once I have a full list:

NORTHEAST
Gunks
Daks
Cathedral/Whitehorse/Cannon
Rumney
Acadia/Desert Island

SOUTHEAST
The New
The Red
T Wall
Seneca
Stone Mtn
Table Rock/Linville

WEST
Yosemite/Tuolome
Sierras
Joshua Tree
Donner Pass/Lake Tahoe
Red Rocks

NORTHWEST
Smith
Leavenworth
Squamish

ROCKIES
City of Rocks
Needles
Devil's Tower
Maple Canyon
Little/Big Cottonwood
Wind Rivers
Tetons
Boulder Canyon
Eldorado Canyon
Rocky Mtn Natn'l Park
Rifle
Indian River/Moab

SOUTHWEST
Hueco
Potrero

Thanks for any help you can give.

Make a separate desert region since it has nothing to do with the Rockies, move Indian Creek and Red Rocks to it, and add Zion, the San Rafael Swell, and the Moab area to it.

Add Index and the North Cascades to the Northwest.

Remove Boulder Canyon and add the South Platte instead from the Rockies.

Add Paradise Forks, Cochise, and Mt Lemmon to the southwest.

Add the Needles to the West.

Far from complete..

  • On a political map several of your South East locations are actually in the North East.

  • It's "Indian Creek" not "Indian River"

  • HP-40, Little Rock City, Hounds Ears

  • You have Squamish - if Canada's part of this then you need to add a ton of other destinations.

  • Arizona ;\) (Mt. Lemmon, Cochise Stronghold, Superstitions, etc.)

  • Zion

  • ...

Southeast:

Sunset Cliffs
Looking Glass

and to Table Rock/Linville should be added "/Shortoff"

for that matter, the Chattanooga areas could be lumped together, i.e., "T-Wall/Sunset Cliffs/Jamestown/Foster Falls/Obed"

It's difficult to say whether things should be lumped together or not without understanding the complete interface that the user deals with. If you can't distinguish a request for a Cathedral partner from one for Canon there's an issue - imo.

If you want to have a look at the interface, you can go over to ClimbingPartner.com and sign up to have a look-see at the new site.

The credit card system is in test mode so you can use the credit card number, 4111111111111111, to set up an account.

From the "search" page, you can click on "add destinations" or just check out the interface during the sign-up.

It's worth mentioning again, the current region designations aren't set in stone by any means.

I'd definitely separate Cathedral/Whitehorse from Cannon. Also, consider adding a section for Kancamagus crags.

Out West, Pinnacles National Monument is probably where most Bay Area climbers go for full day trips when they can't get out to the Valley. Also, though it's not a big area, tons of Bay Area people go for the day/afternoon to Castle Rock/Indian Rock. There's a lot of traffic at both areas.

Definitely add Looking Glass to the Southeast, and maybe Rumbling Bald. Definitely put Cannon separate from Cathedral/Whitehorse.

(oh and Tuolumne has an n in it and only one o)

I'll second a separate section for desert, also adding the Colorado National Monument area and Virgin River Gorge to those previously mentioned. I think separating Owens River Gorge from the Sierras also makes sense.

Agree with Andrew about adding Cochise Stronghold, Mt Lemmon and Sedona/Flagstaff (includes Sedona/ Paradise Forks/Jacks.....)

For California I'd also add

Needles and Idywyld Area (ok, my spelling sucks).

whilethe Pinnacles may be an area that many Bay Area residence go if you were choosing a 50 destination list, I doubt it would make the make. Would be like adding Taylors Falls for the Midwest List

Well, no, though I have never heard of Taylors Falls, I suspect adding Pinnacles would not be the same. If it is a website that is to help people find climbing partners, I suspect that the Bay Area has one of the larger populations of climbers in the US, and if they're all going to Pinnacles the way NYC residents go to the Gunks (for the day), it's a lot of people who are going to be potentially be looking for partners there. Like I said, I have not heard of Taylors Falls, but my initial suspicion is that a population of climbers of the same magnitude as the Bay Area does not exist in the midwest? At any rate, I'll guess that it's not worth all that much discussion because I suppose Evan will make up his site with whatever areas he comes up with, then as he starts getting feedback for demand he'll tweak it?

Having been an active climber in the Bay Area for 6 yrs I would have to say that there was no one area that they would all go to. On a good weekend (that was less then 100F at the Pinnacles,. you would have maybe 75 climbers there, probably about the same at Castle Rock, maybe 15 at Boy Scout Rock, maybe 4-6 at Mickeys Beach, a lot making the drive to the Tahoe area, a lot going to Yosemite and a few to Calavaras Dome. Unlike the East Coast climbers there was really no focus on any one specific area.

It's probably better that I place most of the areas now so that I know how many regions to create. I'd like to set up the regions so that people will see a reasonable number of climbing destinations on one screen (there's probably room for 20 - 30 per region. I think the regions should probably be geared to the major climbing population centers, so that if you're in San Fran, you see a list of the most likely crags you're likely to visit.

One nice thing about the new system is that users are free to mix and match destinations from any number of regions, and see the what going on at their favorite crags from just one page.

you could always just have a SF bay area and have that encompass things like pinnales, berkley boulders, Catsle crags etc. I would separate north tahoe from south tahoe.

East side stuff like bishop, whitney, etc.

Splitting Tahoe into North and South does usually make sense but you put Lovers Leap, Phantom Spires and Sugarloaf into the South section?

In the Northwest Squamish trumps both Leavenworth and Smith. Really they should rank:

1) Squamish
2) Smith Rock
3) Leavenworth
4) City of Rocks

Sqaumish is about the only thing that even remotely compares to the Gunks BTW. You don't come here for cragging; it's all about alpine.

Ah - very good point oenophore.

FWIW, most people out here consider Idaho to be part of the PNW.

I just think Leavenworth is way over-rated. I guess I resurrected this thread because I miss the Gunks so much. There's nothing like it out here. The alpine climbing is supreme but I rarely go cragging any more. I'm spoiled by what I experienced on the east coast.

That's just the panhandle - it's like a different state. But that SE corner, south of I-84 and Pocatello and east of Twin Falls, is most definitely the Intermountain west and much more a part of the Rockies than the PNW.

Dude, no one moves to WA on the wet side of the Cascades and expects to go cragging regularly! Of course Skaha is only about 5.5 hrs from Monroe - about what Stannard did to get to the Gunks each weekend when he lived in Silver Springs MD.

Also for what it's worth, a book of mine, The Wines & Wineries of America's Northwest by Ted Jordan Meredith, lists places in southwest Idaho and even western Montana.

So what your saying Marc, is that JStan had a big carbon footprint when he lived on the east coast. Is that right?

Isn't one's carbon footprint diminished by how many people you bring (commute) with you? Stannard nearly always brought along a belayer, and most of the folks from Boston and points east came as pairs and even crowds. RC

Dude-

You gotta go to Index. And Squamish. Its gotta be my favorite place to climb in North America (ok, that and Indian Creek). You can get longer routes 10-12 pitch cragging, at a moderate level (unlike the free-routes on El Cap), short routes, and everything in between.

For the Rockies, there are popular sport climbing destinations in Wyoming: Ten Sleep, Sinks Canyon, Wild Iris.
The International Climbers Festival this week is in Lander, WY, near the last 2 areas I mentioned. Heading over there to check out the scene...
