Ok, driving on the thruway, doing 80mph and a mini van comes screaming up behind me doing at least 90mph, probably faster, I get in the right lane to let it pass and it has a ton of outward signs of religious affliation all over it. Crosses, fish, bumper stickers, etc.

My first thought was, how hypocritical, that person is going to alot of trouble to proclaim to the world how deeply religious they are, yet they seem very willing to break the law willy nilly. Many people I know disagree, so:

1. What are outward religious symbols really saying to the world, (I am a moral person, I belong to a certain church, etc)

2. Does speeding really make someone guilty of some moral crime.

3. Why do people decorate their cars with signs of who they are as a person, to be blasted out to the world at 60mph.

I don't know, not only was I bored that day driving, I'm a little bored at work today also.

Perhaps the driver had borrowed the van from a generous friend.

But assuming you observed the rightful owner/driver, there is a very strong message conveyed here:

"If I die in a mangled, fiery wreck, I'm going to heaven."

You doing 80 and him 90 sounds a bit of the pot calling the kettle black to me. Who is the bigger idiot? the guy doing 90 in a 55-65 zone, or the guy doing 80 in the 55-65 zone wondering why there is a bigger knucklehead out there than him?

Maybe it is a sign from God for you to slow the heck down.

If I was Jesus I would drive a minivan.

In most conditions:
Our last minivan was very controllable at 75
My Sub is very controllable past the two digit range.

My first thought when I read "I bored that day driving" was drive faster!

I didn't write it though cause then then I realized you're already going 80. I think highway driving is a bit like climbing. People participate at a level they feel is safe. Where speed is concerned it varies widely.

Laws are another issue all together.

That said I think that before regular use of distracting devices while driving, bored drivers were among the most dangerous of "normal" drivers - meaning those not intoxicated in any way or plainly tired.

Dunno about that one... I bet Jesus would walk, or ride a bike... And use a hybrid if there was a necessity to drive...

All depends on which Jesus you believe in.

3. Why do people decorate their cars...?

Because I think lots of people are proud of being part of a "scene" and flashing stickers like "NEICE" of "GUNX" or "PETZL" or "MF" or "Jesus Saves" lets them announce to the entire world that they are cool and part of that scene.

Being cool and part of a scene may be a motive for some, but not many people will recognize "NEICE" of "GUNX" or "PETZL" or "MF". So I doubt that the owners of cars with those stickers get much response.

While my car is sticker free, I have and had fun talking with climbers and water skiers who I identified by the stickers on their car. I don’t think it’s such a terrible thing.

“Jesus Saves” advertisements are sometimes recruiting devices.

Youngsters who put stickers on their parents cars often put little thought into what they are doing or what the sticker means.
