Best 3-pitch Routes:

The sweet arete is the second pitch of Directissima... The aesthetically correct way to reach the High E ledge.

But that's on Directissima, not High E ;\)

Well in my own admittedly twisted and distorted view of this world...

High E is the final pitch from the High E ledge (nobody is taking photos of climbers in that corner or going up the face). This pitch also happens to be the natural finish to Directissima. Therefore when someone says arete and High E I know where they are coming from (not least because I have daydreams of climbing that arete on a warm sunny day).

The arete pitch of Directissima...the single best pitch of 5.6 climbing in the Gunks

All of Son of Easy Overhang in one pitch...you can't beat the mix of climbing you get

the the third best pitch of climbing in the Gunks goes to....the second pitch of Bloody Bush. Ha ha! Just kidding.

The third best pitch I think is probably the last pitch of CCK Direct.

RangerRob took my answer. The next time I do Directissima I'm going to do it all in one pitch to the GT ledge, making that the single best pitch of climbing at the Gunks. Last time I did it I got to the belay at the end of the combo P1/P2 pitch (where you avoid the traverse) with very little rope drag, so I'm pretty sure it can be done.

It's been a while and I forget the distances involved, but if your second blows that first thin crux, will rope stretch give them a sprained/broken ankle when they hit the ground, as has happened on Drunkard's? Same question for Directissima, if done in one pitch to the GT.

I really can't narrow it down to only 3. The Gunks has so many great pitches that even the fave 3 at each grade would be difficult. But for three out of many....

Birdland p1
Single File
Mellow Yellow

Alright, to make up for those last two:
Carbs & Caffeine p1
Raunchy/Osteopath link-up

Gee, I've run out of three - where can I put the second pitches of Limelight and Annie Oh! ? And Sound and Fury?

From the ground to the top of the cliff, it's hard to top Jekyl & Hyde for quality & quantity at the grade.
Pitch 2 of Again and Again ( I love traverses ), and p-3 of CCK and the arete pitch of Directissima are a tie

I can't believe this thread is going to die at 22, when the photo thread is up to 800.

My 3 favorites might be CCK Direct, Nosedive, and Bonnie's pitch 1.

Hmm, maybe the thread should drift away because we're likely to repeat what's already been said. So I'll just mention some other great pitches no one has said.

Erect Direction p1 (maybe the best single pitch of 5.8 in the Gunks)
Double Crack (all in one pitch)
Layback (all in one pitch)

Somewhat redundant, I vote Limelight, Son of Easy O, and Middle Earth tonight. Tomorrow I'll likely think more highly of others, as my usual favorite is whatever I'm on at the moment.

Ive been hesitant to answer since there are so many...

I think a good contender for a top three would be:

Madame G's- In one pitch (or at least from the tree if you do it that way).

Keep On Struttin'- In one from the GT. Careful use of doubles needed.

10000 Restless Virgins- Shorter than the rest but SO good.

Hey I just stumbled on this old thread and it is fun. I have a really hard time narrowing this down so I think I have to make 3 easier pitches and 3 harder ones.

Easier:

1. Horseman
2. Crux pitch of CCK
3. Snooky's P1

Harder:

1. Falled on Account of Strain in one pitch
2. Birdcage
3. Stannard's Roof

I'm in a place now where every 5.10 I try becomes my new favorite, there are so many good ones and I've still done so few.

Anyone else want to chime in?

Jackie in one pitch to the top has got to be about the best 5.5 out there.

Birdland in one pitch to the top has a WHOLE lotta climbing

Doubleissima

Those are my three

Going for no repeats from upthread (because otherwise Madame G's, Son of Easy O and Middle Earth would be here):

P1 of Main Line, that's an interesting choice. I think most people prefer the second pitch.

P2 is nice, but is sort of a one-move wonder, IMO. P1 has more climbing and is spicy enough to keep you on your toes!
