Other than posing for your pleasure, Dawn, there seems to be no reason for him to bother with that harness he is wearing if he insists on lowering himself by hand. Good call.

Why might one worry?

Because you might go blind.

Although it looks like he might be lowering himself by hand (my favorite way to rap overhangs), I actually think the person in the photo is being lowered.

There's no rope visible below him and the rope above is running through some device. (A gri-gri?) The rope continues out of the picture to the right.

You can also see a biner on the back of the harness with what looks like a belay plate hanging off if it. Maybe this person does know how to rappel. Or maybe he just owns some cool gear.

We’re not supped to zoom or look and look it critically. We’re supposed to think he is keeping himself from falling with his bare hands at the end of the rope.

What I want to know is why you would do their exercises specifically to gain grip strength.

Ah, I'm sorry. I didn't explain myself.

This person is being lowered and is scared out of his wits. BUT, because he has been training, he's better at getting gripped.

I've already started the program and hope I can be as scared this spring.
