6 inches of rain in 4 days...

This is the view back toward the village of New Paltz from high up on the ridge at Minnewaska S.P.

The photo is not very clear but you can see Rt 299 west of the bridge disappearing into the floodwaters, and judge the extent of the water in the fields.

Perhaps, as in days of old, when Nile floods annually refreshed Lower Egypt's croplands with alluvial silt, the same takes place locally.

As far back as I can remember, at least the last 40 years, that plain has flooded every few years or even more frequently. I can remember some legendary floods in the 60s and early 70s that were truely amazing to my young mind and we would play ice hockey through the winter on the flooded oxbow lakes around my home along the Esopus near the Thruway.

In typical boy fashion, we found it quite humorus to hook each other with our hockey sticks so that we would fall backwards and smack our heads. This accounted for my first 2 major concussions and may explain some of my quicky behaviors as well as the visual field changes. Thank God for a good flood, eh?
