For those of you who live in the area, what do you use to get high speed internet service to your home? I've been researching, and it seems like Time Warner Cable doesn't service my area, and the only other choice (besides dial up), appears to be Verizon DSL. We don't really need phone service or cable TV, so it would suck to have to pay lots of money for those other services when all we want is internet. Any other ideas of what may be available in Esopus?

Thanks,
Jannette

Most towns get cable via TW (Road Runner internet) or Cablevision (Optimum Online). See if you have the latter; it's been OK for us.

As I mentioned earlier, Time Warner claims that they don't have service to my house, I found out that they go to my neighbor's house, so I need to find out how much money it's going to cost to extend and bury the cable line. I'm sure it won't be cheap. Anyone have internet through DirectTV?

Did you check into the phone service?

That's gotta be WAY cheaper than extending the cable line... And if the power goes out as much as it does on our side of the ridge, you'll want a good old fashion wired phone.

Don't know anyone with the DirectTV set-up but I have not heard good reviews of the system...

How far away is the neighbor? Have you considered giving them a flat fee each year to let you use a wireless router off of their account? You can even use a repeater if the distance is greater than a regular signal can travel.

"Hi! I'm your new neighbor. Can I piggyback off your internet?"

Your going to connect one way or another, right?

First step is to use your laptop with a wireless card to see if they have an unsecured connection that you can use at the edge of your property.

Work from there. No sense making a problem where there isn't one!

I didn't find any other unsecured connections to piggy back on. For now I have a wireless broadband PC card from work - but it only works on my old work laptop (my personal laptop has a newer format card slot), and I can't share it, so the rest of my family can't use it. Also, my job status is in limbo, so this is only a temporary solution (and I'm only supposed to be using it for work purposes).

Still on the hunt, the cable company is supposed to call me back to discuss, been waiting 3 days now. Grrrr.

Not sure where you are in Esopus but my parents live on the border of New Paltz and they finally got cable after many years.
