For any interested, there has been a great thread running on http://www.supertopo.com involving a number of influential 60s, 70s, and 80s gunksters. Great interaction and photos. It has given me pause as I read of Kevin Bein, Bill Ravitch, Mike Robinson, Thom Schuer and others who helped me along the way with a kind word or acknowledgement even though I was just a kid/gumby who would never climb at that level. Especially interesting has been some recollections of John Stannard and the start of the trail building process. Thanks RG for your photos and stories.

Nice thread, but as they say, nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I know some of you have been hitting the gunks longer than I, but for most these names are only something you see in the guide. Kevin Bein was truely one of the nicest, welcoming guys I've ever met. I can't say we were the best of friends but we were friendly to each other and interacted almost weekly, since he was always at the cliff and everyone seemed to hang around the uberfall at the end of the day. His death was a big blow to many people and I continue to miss him.
I think most people accept the death of others pretty casually when they are young adults and learn to appreciate others more as we grow older. I would not be surprised that most younger lurkers couldn't care less about some older climbers.
