Anyone get into the Adirondacks this last weekend? I'd be interested in hearing some reports on black fly conditions.

I was in the Moose River area today (working) and the critters were annoying but, all in all, conditions were not what I'd call severely bad. How about Keene Valley or Poko?

It has been quite buggy here this year. They were still around yesterday but I think the end of the cycle is near. I live in the Champlain Valley and the black flies are already gone.

I was in Keene Valley last Saturday - the flies were pretty bad, though with liberal applications of Deet I seemed to be able to avoid the majority of bites. One woman who was climbing a route down the cliff from us had a beekeeper style hat on when she was belaying to keep them from flying into her ears/eyes etc.

Annoying little critters, and the bites hurt!

It's hard to be brave when you're a chicken.

Headnets are the way to go if one has be out in ADK black fly season. (just don't try to spit through one)

Also, I find several coats of poly-urethane covering all skin and caulking all openings in clothing. And stay inside, in a bathtub full of DEET.
