Nice article!
I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I signed up for FB back when it was closed to the general public, I used an alumni email account. At that time, there were a few friends (mostly fraternity brothers) who did the same, but since I didn't know the vast majority of people, I didn't bother using it. It was probably still "cool" at that point, but useless to me.
It wasn't until recently that I started hearing people around me talking about it, so I checked back in and found a lot more friends my age on it, and then started logging in more frequently. At that point, it got to be much more useful.
It could be that FB will be like everything else; as the signal/noise ratio increases people will stop using it and move to something less crowded. But I think like Google, it's going to be a while as so many people have begun using it and it's really a nice tool to keep in touch with people.
So you might as well sign up. It may no longer be cool, but it's a great way to keep in touch with old friends. Friends you kinda care about and are interested in knowing what's going on in their lives, but don't really have the energy or time to carry out actual correspondence.
