It amazes me that we could all have so much trouble with that one. I know I'm always thinking ahead to the next pitch when I'm leading through there.

I was surprised too, Chip, but even the climber in the pic didn't recognize the route from the post. Go figure.

It's all in the lighting Muchachos ... there are only a couple of times a year that Ants Line looks like that, and only for a very breif time at that. Most of the time that area of the cliff is in the shade.

I didn't recognize it since it's one of my least favorite climbs of it's grade, so in 25+ years of climbing in the Gunks, I've done it maybe 5 times. And P1 of High E really blows. I've been up to the HE ledge more times via Directissima than via HE.

That's amazing! Going back to the second picture I can see it now, but I could have sworn I was looking up at the final roof of Carbs though the cliff color didn't look dark enough. I can't believe with so much info in the photo and a route that everyone has been on that it was so hard. It's much more obvious in the third photo but still not a dead giveaway. Dennis you should consider putting together a picture book of these with the full photos and answers in the back!

I think that the compression effect of the telephoto zoom lens threw people off. It made the overhangs high above appear to be much closer to the climber than they really are.
