The next GCC Committee Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 6pm. Location will be announced shortly. If you are interested in being a member of the GCC Board of Directors, please email the GCC about your intentions and plan to attend this meeting, as the GCC will produce a slate of nominees at this meeting. The final elections will be held on November 21, 2009. Please contact us at GCC@gunksclimbers.org and let us know you'll be coming.

Please note that the start of Saturday night's GCC meeting has been moved earlier from 6pm to 5pm, to accommodate those who want to go to the Steve House slideshow that evening. We will cover general GCC business first, and hold off on nominations until 6pm for those who may not have seen the last minute change of time.

Posted at 10:35pm on the internet - less than 24 hrs. before the "get together" (hard to call it a meeting in that context), when some folks might be currently in transit or have already arrived. And you wonder why some folks don't take the GCC seriously or might think it secretive.

Marc - LOL. You got me for about two minutes. Touche'. For you (or anyone else in transit) we'll extend the meeting as long as you like, see you there.

It seems as though the GCC hasn't changed in regards to opening up their process. The nominating meeting was held at the current chair's house, as usual. If one wanted to attend the meeting or be nominated one first had to email the GCC with their intentions. According to GCC bylaws, one must serve on the board as a director for two years before being nominated for the chairman's position, thus ensuring continued insularity.

The nominating meeting was two weeks ago and nothing has been announced about who was nominated. The "election" is three weeks away and the climbing community has no idea who is on the slate.

One would think, given the gravity of the situation at Minnewaska, that the GCC would be as open as possible, especially now, so as to bring in as many parctipants as possible

Idunno, Kent. I was really pleased to see so much communication from the GCC lately. While you see problems, I see people who are willing to not only give time to the cause but also take crap from everyone who can't or don't want to bother. It is pretty hard for me to knock that effort, although you have an obvious personal interest in continuing to do so. I think crittics are essential to keeping everyone on thier toes but my hat is off to those who are willing to give of themselves and try to get something accomplished.

No doubt, Jannette of the GCC, and Dave of the Access Fund, deserve special recognition for their efforts to publicize the need for climbers to speak up about Minnewaska. Kudos to both of them for that.

Nominees for the board were posted last night on our website and the facebook page. I was not able to send out a Flash yet because I spent the entire day driving back and forth taking my elderly mom to various doctor's appointments, and just got back, only to be bombarded with about 50 GCC related emails that I have to attend to.

We have a lot of new blood this time on the GCC Board, and we're very excited to have their participation. We had a great turnout at the nominating meeting and it was very productive.

Note that no one else wanted to run for officer positions, so we're stuck with the same officers. This is not some insider's conspiracy, it's just the way it is. No doubt some of us are really burnt out, but as long as we are needed and no one else wants those roles, we will continue in our current roles.

As for the Minnewaska work, thanks for the kudos, Kent (although I must say there really isn't a need for the hostile personal attacks as in the other thread).

I should point out that everyone on the GCC board has been working very hard on the Minnewaska issues, and Dave has been coming to our meetings to help as well, and I am just the messenger (granted, I have been spewing notices about Minnewaska as often as I could to make sure the word gets out). (Those of you who are my facebook friends know I have a habit of posting lots of updates anyway...) Ajax was interviewed on the radio about it, and France has been working very hard to create flyers and send them to climbing gyms everywhere in the area to be posted. Many of us attended and spoke at the hearing, and are sending detailed letters. This has been a team effort. Brady Robinson, Exec director of the Access Fund, just emailed us today to tell us the Access Fund letter generator has already generated 325 letters for Minnewaska! Very exciting news, and I hope everyone takes the time to get their letters in before the 11/13 deadline.
