Sorry to hear that, Strat. DJD of any joint usually has an underlying cause, such as trauma or abnormal mechanics. I would think that climbing rock or ice would be OK for a hip once you get the surrounding muscles strengthened and some flexibility. Continuing to use the joint properly is often of huge benefit. Humping a big pack around and impact, such as jumping down off ledges are much more likely to be a problem.

I can't brag too much. The ice was plastic, dry, and well traveled. I'm sure it was way easier than it should have been. picture PT conditions last year. However the crux curtain off the second pitch belay was an attention getter.

you guys are lucky.... we just got 6-8ft of snow and the avi's have been sluffing off as 8ft slabs..... nothing in the backcountry for a while.
