There's a lot of fairly easy routes at DWG in the 5.3 to 5.7 range. Its not as clean as the Gunks. So you should cautiously start off climbing routes several levels below your ability. Most climbs there protect fairly well. And you do want to place protection often even on the easy ones, especially if there are ledges below you don't want to hit. Its not sport climbing there so you need a trad rack, including a full set of cams. Two secret weapons I always carry at the Gap: a larger than usual cam and the smaller ball nuts. Both of those can get you out of a tight "R" spot at DWG.
So that's the closest real climbing for you. But I'd recommend going with someone that knows the area a bit, at least until you get used to the Gap's rock, rappels, and general funkiness. Its an adventureous cliff not a casual crag.

Alex,
thx bro... let me know if/when you hear a group is going. I'd be interested and would prefer to climb it 1st with someone who know the crag.

I hear tell that there is nice climbing on Stoney Ridge, which is easily seen from NE extension just north of the tunnel on your right side. I haven't been there and don't know particulars.

Park at the entrance on E. Rock Rd, walk down the gravel drive past the radio towers and you'll run right into this field of boulders. For local climbing spots, this is a pretty good one. Interesting routes, a couple of anchor points, and easily accessible. The rocks have been heavily vandalized, however, and the spray-paint can interfere with climbing.‎

Is there a new PA climbing guide that is to be published soon? You might want to check on the www about that. Stony Ridge is fun, but a bit short, and not too far from Allentown. If you would like a copy of the guidebook to Stony (which I believe is out of print), just send me a PM. It is also, as far as I know, illegal to climb there, but that restriction has never been vigorously enforced. You could also sport climb at Birdsboro. Check Mountain Project for more info.

Allentown is only 2 1/2 hours from the Gunks! I live another 50 minutes west of Allentown and have done countless day and weekend trips. I'd re-think the way you're looking at the distance. It's worth it.

Rob. Following on FB. Be sure to tell us when the actual book is out. I'm not a fan of ebooks. I want to hold it. smile

BTW. You and I spoke on the phone once I think, decade or so ago. Glad to see one of us has remained serious.
