Anyone know someone who's build a large pond? Not a small vinyl bottom decorative thing, but something in the area of 1 acre or more? I have an area I think might work, looking for an excavator/engineer with some experience in this.
Thanks for any info.

He is a pro excavator with an engineering degree. Sounds like what your looking for. I highly recommend him.

I'd be carful if it's going to be connected to the Stony Kill. Ponds 1 acre or more can create a major negative impact to smaller cold water fisheries. (The problem is the warm water discharge) Stony Kill I believe is classified as a cold water fishery, and they have even tried to re-introduction of Trout in the lower sections.

Yes, I'm on the S'kill. Caught 2 nice trout this spring! I think it's pretty much against the law to tamper with or influence any water ways or water sources like that. But thanks for the heads up on discharge. I don't know much about this but I was thinking about a solar powered pump to aerate at one end - avoiding stagnation and minimizing the need for more fresh water flow. Thoughts??

I was thinking I'd tap into a spring that's a good 100 meters from the creek. Maybe an acre is a bit large - probably looking at 200 meters square, give or take... My neighbor is an engineer, I'd consult him on this as well.

Thanks all, for the info on Steve - his website is impressive.

Cheers

200 m square is 9 acres, give or take.

Hmmm... I believe 1 acre is roughly 4000 meters sq.

Perhaps I'm using the wrong language - I meann 200 x 200 meters.

An acre, if square, is about 209 FEET on a side. 200 meters is 656 feet.

This thread has made at least me curious. Please tell us how it came out when it's finished.

Our neighbor had their small natural pond expanded a few years back. The engineer used a large excavator and did his digging from the edge of the existing pond. It is now about 90 X 100 ft in size. When done they had a nice 9 ft deep pond fed from two springs. Then the dog waded across a few days later. So much for 9 ft. Check depth before the equipment leaves the site and the check is written. Current owners have an electric pump/fountain going nearly all season and it barely keeps the pond clear of various green growths etc. Three weeks ago they suffered a die off of approximately 250 bass. They still await test results. Ponds look so nice but unless there is real live flow, they are extremely difficult to keep healthy. Good luck.

Trout in SK? That's awesome! Anytime you need help with a trout survey (fancy way for me to say I'd love to fyfish and catch and release) let me know. I have a book that talks about Stream Therapy for cold water fisheries, I'll have to take a look and see if it talks about pond such. You are more then welcome to borrow.

Trout Unlimited is the source for (or the best place to start) for information on this kind of stuff. www.tu.org. (national site) I think the closes chapter is the Ashokan http://apwctu.org/chapter.html

I sent a PM with my number.

Sweet, I was going to ask how that turned out. I netted 8 Brown Trout last night all over 12" except 1. I tossed them all back as I'm too lazy to clean and cook for myself.

i hate to break it to you, but 200 x 200 = 40,000 not 4,000
an acre is 43560sqft, the square root of which is 208.71032557111303591192697393256 on a side

you are right, an acre is also 4,046.87261 square meters, the square root of which is 63.615034465132532851053155796191 meters on a side
