4 and a 1/2 months. 18 weeks, 126 days, give or take a few. Although I have to say the weather yesterday was the best June weather I have ever climbed in.

Ethnicity doesn't factor in Ice climbing. If you are there, you do it and then you drink. If you don't, its more for the rest of us(In terms of ice to climb and drinking).... simple.

Do you know the different between Scotch and Whiskey?

Scotch is what Americans call Scots' whiskey. The alternate spelling for the latter word is whisky. The Irish spell it one way, the British the other; I don't remember which.

I'm no expert, but I do believe Scotch refers only to single malt made in Scotland. blended whiskeys made in Scotland wouldn't be called Scotch. is that right?

Actually RR, Scotch does not have to be a single malt, (Dewars, Chivas & Johnnie Walker to name a few are all blends) But it does have to be from Scotland. If you run out of Jameson stop by the house I think I have about 7 Scotches you may sample while you wait for ice season!

O, Jen, I like Scotch too! How was Chapel Pond? We stayed low on single pitch climbs because of the heat - hit Beer Walls one day, Creature wall the other and went rafting on Hudson another day.

I've discovered whitewater kayaking as a fun alternative to climbing on hot days. Finding suitable partners and driving to where the water is running are sometimes not easy, but it's nice to be able to just dip my helmet in the water and pour it over my head when I need to cool off.

I was thinking about ways to stay in shape for ice-climbing season, besides the regular stuff (rock climbing, running, etc.) I would not try to drytool in the Gunks of course, but perhaps in some other locales? Catskills come to mind, because, well, rock is chossy for the most part and all scarred from mixed climbing anyway. Another idea I had was to find some dead trees and climb them. What do you all think about that?

I have some rubber cover picks for my Grivels that I can use on my home wall, but rarely do so.

Dip the tips in that liquid plastic you put on tool handles. Pretty durable stuff and you can apply it as thin or thick as necessary for dry tooling on climbing walls. Or, use wooden holds on the wall for some bite that won't dull tips.

Scattered frost was forecast for western Ulster County this morning. I awoke with hopes of seeing crusty white grass. Alas, I was dissapointed:(

Have you tried Baileys? I became a convert skiing last year, wouldn't touch the stuff when its above freezing point. It also must be fresh, so you have to finish the bottle each day!

If you want to drink cheap Irish whiskey, try Powers, much nicer than Jameson.

something tells me you'd sooner catch RR swinging pink tools than drinking Bailey's!
