Iran to release American hiker Sarah Shourd, official says
By the CNN Wire Staff

Nora Shourd, right, visits her daughter, Sarah Shourd, earlier this year. Iran says it will release Shourd.

NEW: Jailed hiker Sarah Shourd to be freed "very soon," Iran says
Iranian official says release is scheduled for Saturday morning
Hikers' mothers say all three are innocent and should be released
(CNN) -- Sarah Shourd, one of three American hikers held in Iran for more than a year, will be released Saturday, Iranian officials said Thursday.
An official at Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance said earlier Thursday that one of the three would be freed this weekend, after the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, without specifying which one. But Bak Sahraei, a representative for the Iranian mission to the United Nations, told CNN that Shourd was designated for release "very soon."
The Culture Ministry official said one of Iran's vice presidents will be present when the hiker is released at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Shourd, along with Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were detained July 31, 2009, after they allegedly strayed across an unmarked border into Iran while hiking in Iraq's Kurdistan region. Tehran has said the three hikers were spies, and Iran's intelligence minister has hinted the country may consider releasing them in exchange for the release of Iranian prisoners, according to state news outlets.
Masoud Shafii, the Iranian lawyer who represents the hikers, said he has put in a formal request for the trio's release within the past two weeks. Shafii said he told prosecutors that a year had passed since their arrests and the government had not shown any just cause for their imprisonment, and that Shourd has a medical condition that requires proper care.
After the news first broke Thursday, the mothers of all three said they had seen the reports and were "urgently seeking further information."

"We hope and pray that the reports are true and that this signals the end of all three of our children's long and difficult detention," Cindy Hickey, Nora Shourd and Laura Fattal said in a joint statement. "Shane, Sarah and Josh are all innocent and we continue to call for their immediate release, so that they can return home together and be reunited with our families."
Upon release, Shourd would be leaving her fiance behind in prison. The families announced in spring that Shourd and Bauer got engaged in prison and plan to be married when they're both released.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters, "We don't know, frankly, what Iran is contemplating at this point." He said the United States was making inquiries through the Swiss government, which represents U.S. interests in Tehran.
"Obviously, if this turns out to be true, this is terrific news," Toner said. "The hikers' release is long overdue, and I would just stress that we hope that it's all three hikers."

Finally!

Iran calls off release of detained U.S. hiker

TEHRAN, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Iranian officials said Saturday that Iran has put on hold the release of one of the three U.S. female hikers in custody, reversing an earlier announcement on the hiker's release.

Iran postpones release of female U.S. hiker
U.S. urges Iran to release all three detained Americans Mohammad Hassan Salehimaram, an official from the information center of Iran's presidential office, said Saturday that "the release of an American... was postponed."
"The details (of postponement) will be issued later," Salehimaram was quoted by official IRNA news agency as saying.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Friday that the detained U.S. female hiker Sarah Shourd would be released soon to join her family.

"Discussions are still ongoing regarding the details and the date of her release," said Mehmanparast without giving further details as to when and where the hiker would be released, according to local satellite Press TV.

Meanwhile, Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi told Press TV on Saturday that judicial proceedings in the defendant's case have not been completed.

"Because the legal procedure of Sarah Shourd's case is not finished, her release is cancelled," he said without mentioning when the American woman would be released.

On Thursday, Iran confirmed earlier reports that it would release Sarah Shourd, one of the three U.S. hikers held in Tehran for over a year.

Also on Thursday, Iran's Islamic Cultural and Guidance Ministry told Xinhua in a text message that it would release one of the detained American hikers in Tehran on Saturday.

Reporters were invited to Esteqlal (Independence) Hotel in Tehran to cover the release of the hiker, according to the message.

The U.S. State Department then urged Iran to release all three hikers after Tehran announced it would release one of them on Saturday.

The U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner on Thursday urged Iran to release all three hikers, saying the U.S. government has called for their release "on humanitarian grounds for many, many months."

The three Americans, Sarah Shourd, Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer, were arrested in Iran on July 31 last year after they illegally entered the country from its western borders.

They were charged with espionage last November, which the U.S. government considered totally unfounded and said they should be freed.

In May, the mothers of the three Americans were allowed by the Iranian government to meet their children in Tehran.

In June, the 32-year-old Iranian scholar Shahram Amiri, who once worked at Iran's Malek Ashtar University and had gone missing on a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia last year, arrived at Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport from the United States.

Media reports had said that the scholar was released by the U.S. to exchange the three Americans hikers, which was rejected by Iran.
