I just thought I'd start this thread so we can share our favorite places to eat around town. In addition, there are a few new places that have opened in the last few months:

Rock & Rye Tavern - just opened - didn't try it yet

A Tavola - outstanding Italian - modern and eclectic

Gunk Haus - excellent modern German fare and beer.

Anatolia - just returned after a few years - authentic Turkish fare

As a foodie at heart, in addition to the places stated above, my favs restaurants are...

The Village TeaRoom Restaurant & Bake Shop - for the dingle pies, salads, soups, chicken, turkey pot pie, and, of course, their outstanding desserts.

Harvest Cafe great views of the Ridge from their outdoors patio and wonderful food

Karma Road - they have the best post-climbing (running, hiking, biking...) smoothies

not necessarily new paltz but i did finally find some really good authentic mexican food in kingston. La roma is a pizza/ mexican restaurant across from the ymca on broadway. We were hesitant at first due to the pizza aspect though the banner which read tortas, huarachas, tamales etc made me give it a try.
The menu is thorough and inexpensive, i had two tacos, carne enchilada total $ 4:00.
The taco list reads as followes: bisteak, suadero, cesina, carne enchilada, choriso, carnitas, pollo, alambres, lengua de res, tripa de res, cabeza de puerco.
very friendly family run.

My favorite place to eat in the Gunks is Oscar on the other side of the ridge. The place is worth an extra few miles trek over 44/55.

Il Cena'colo - The best Tuscan cuisine outside of Italy. Forty (40) specials nightly. Truly for a special occasion, especially if you get carried away...

Try Pure City on Main St. (RT 52) in Pine Bush. 25 minutes south of the Trapps.
Vegan chinese menu. I'm no vegan but I find the fare exceptional.

For pizza Rinos in the plaza across from Stop and Shop is good. If you're around on Tuesday night the New Paltz Indian Restaurant has an all you can eat buffet for 13 bucks. On Thursdays the all you can eat buffet is at the Mediterranean place right next to Yanni's Excellent falafel. Of course a lamb gyro platter at Yanni's always leaves one satisfied. I'll also have to give Oscar a thumbs up. The order 2 of the $5 sides and a Hurrican Kitty and you've got yourself a meal. If you want wings try Murphy's in New Paltz, just up the road from Starbucks. Go there before 8pm or so. It turns into a college bump and grind fest after that.

I'll give you that, but i still think it is the best pizza in town. Certainly better than Pasquale's in the same parking lot! Pasquale's owns the pizza joint in Gardiner too.

Stone Barns isn't exactly close to NP. Awesome food, but not where I'd typically go after a day's hard climbing. At least not without a stop at home to shower and change.

I find the Red brick a tad on the pretentious side, but hell I think a lot of places are kind of pretentious. The Bakery in New Paltz has always been high on my list of places to avoid, as has the Mountain deli.

Now if you want to talk cheap breakfast....Convenient Deli on 299 and 32 south, in the little plaza. Double egg, bacon and swiss on a roll with a chocolate milk for $3.50. You Can't beat that anywhere in New Paltz for quick breakfast.

I remember when the Plaza Diner was the place for breakfast.

Or, the early Gay Nineties. With Kev and Barb on duty, you always felt welcomed, and the food wasn't bad either.

True. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I recall turnaround time was faster at the Diner than at the Nineties, so that one spent less time at the former, more than compensating for the greater distance to the Preserve.

Gay Nineties food service being slow or fast depended on how much beta Kevin was serving vs food plates. And, the Nineties usually had fewer staff as well. We'd walk or drive down from the college, eat, stop at "Mud and Slush", and catch/offer rides to the cliffs in time to get a prime parking spot along the rail opposite the Ube.

Ah, when days were simple huh? VW camp van, painter pants, rugby shirt and your girl along as well. Ron and Fannie doing the guard rail breakfast buffet.

I have to say I do miss the guardrail breakfast. Ever since the gummint shut that down, it's been the Plaza Diner for me - since when did that stop being the place to go? Who else serves breakfast at 4am so you can start climbing at first light, or slightly before?

Oh boy Rickster; it's so tempting to wallow in nostalgia. What it all teaches us is to appreciate what we've got because it may well be gone soon. Other than this website, what do we have now in and around our playground that's new and better than we had in days of yore?

That photo did bring back some great memories. You'd have to get to there pretty early to grab the primo "spot" at the opening between the guardrails. I had a pick-up w/a cap on it and spent more nights than I can remember sleeping in it. I may have mentioned before that I recall a busy weekend at the gunks meant there were only about 2 dozen or cars parked along the guardrails.

Then they put the outhouse at the top of the rise (sometime in the 80's I think) and every now and then you'd get a whiff of it. Putting that outhouse there to me was the beginning of the end of roadside parking.

Rick I agree, Aroma Thyme is outstanding food, but a bit on the pricey side. Have you had the Korean BBQ in Pine Bush yet?

Some years back, but my wife is vegan, so she often gets first choice on restaurant choices. And, I'm more the meat and potatoes kind of guy.

Another one with in the Northern Orange County area, is the Wildfire Cafe in Montgomery, great food as well.

There's also a fine Mexican restaurant in Ellenville, right across from Aroma Thyme. Simple, good, and inexpensive.
