And to think that this was once called the practice slab at lake willoughby.....

We old timers still call them that with tongue firmly in cheek and to make ourselves feel better. Given that nearly everything up there is pretty hard, a grade 3+ feels like practice! This section is listed as The Tablets now.

CptnNP, I'm jealous, most of the ice I've been on this year has been anorexic at best with the thickest thing I've been on is the stuff I was on when I was on a business trip and I hooked up with Neri and climbed in the Catskills.

Here's a photo of me on the summit of Cerro El Plomo, 5424 meters, about 25 miles east of Santiago. You can see Aconcagua in the background. Perfect day--no wind, no cloud, warm and nice. We climbed El Plomo this weekend. It's a great winter ascent also, as one can then ski down the glacier (rather than trudge down the scree).

My first (obviously! ) trip to Jtree. Spring 2001
Also my first real climbing road trip. mmmmm J-Tree.

Here's a photo of the granite south wall of Cerro San Gabriel, just north of a small village of the same name, in the Cajon del Maipo. About 90 minutes from northern Santiago, and about a one hour approach hike over talus. 400m, and about 10 pitches of fine granite. Routes from 5.7 to 5.12. No guidebook, no topos, but you can find a few bolts and/or slings at belay stations.

We climbed here a few weeks ago, had a few route-finding issues, but the rock and route were spectacular when we found our way.

What a small world... I was hiking through that canyon last week on Spring Break. I was down there on a field trip with the Environmental Science Dept. I brought my shoes and did some bouldering but didn't have a partner to do anything like that, it must've been fun. If I figure out how to post pictures, I have some andean boulering pics.
