In particular near East London on the Eastern Cape. Any information on other parts of South Africa would also be appreciated as we will be travelling around the whole country (well a lot of it!).
Know any club/company websites that would have info?
Is it all trad climbing or is there some sports climbing as I don't have and can't afford a rack!

(I already asked this question in the Travel section but I wanted to see if I'd get more answers here.)

Also, can someone petition YA to put in a mountaineering section... I tried but got no response.

Table Mountain for sure, it's kinda like the gunks, but 3k feet high and hovering over the ocean. Absolutely beautiful climbing - get on Jacob's Ladder, superclassic of the area. It's mostly trad there from what I remember.

North towards the stellenbosch region there is supposedly some more remote lines - you'd probably want a guide for those.

Have fun it's awesome down there.

Go to the Cedarbergs. about 2.5 hours from Capetown. This is where the Rock Lands are, also many good sport routes here. Potential for many more lines in this area especially longer trad lines in the Cederbergs. Clanwilliam is the main town in this area. I also Durban is supposed to have many sport areas. There is climbing throughout this country.

I know a couple of people who have climbed there. PM me your email address and I'll forward your query to them. One of them is there right now.

The sport climbing at Watervall Boven in Mpumulanga is great, though it would be way better if there were no bolts - the climbing is very similar to Eldorado Canyon. That is probably the best destination sport climbing area in South Africa.

Table Mountain is incredible but there are no sport routes there. I also loved the big domes in the Drakensburgs, but again, not sport climbing.

hmmm sounds like someone i know...

sa has more climbing than you shake your draws at. what do you want to do?

bouldering - rocklands/cederberg, cape peninsula, probably a million developed and undeveloped spots across the country
sport - waterval boven, montagu, cape peninsula, milner, oudtshorn, cederberg/rocklands, etc
trad - table mountain, lions head, du toits, paarl, drakensberg, spitzkoppe, wolfberg, tafelberg, etc

best sport to east london/pe would probably be oudtshorn. i honestly dont know much about things outside of the western cape (table mountain, lions head, silvermine, mine, montagu, rocklands, etc)

i should add that south africa, in my experience at least, has a very friendly and welcoming climbing community. its smaller than in the US and lots of people tend to know each other already....but that only means its easier to find people to climb with and what not....the climbing scene here is pretty lively and there are some seriously good climbers....

dont believe all the hype that the us climbing media feeds you...its not just americans or europeans sending hard down here....the south africans crush....its not unusual to go to the sport crags here in the cape peninsula and watch someone jumping on 5.13s or 5.14s....and there are plenty of people pulling hard on gear too....

there are tons of guidebooks....plenty of tour companies and local guides....lots of guest houses/farms, backpackers, and campgrounds by and for climbers in major climbing areas....you can find partners on the climb.co.za website but you can also hit up the mountain club which typically has outings scheduled that you could join

whatever you do dont plan on buying gear here...its available but its fucking expensive as hell....bring everything or climb with others who have gear...

i gave up on travelling (for work) with all of my gear a few years ago...now i roll with a harness and shoes and i get out just as often as when i brought the rope and rack...now i just have lighter bags and less shit to get stolen
