At the end of my trip report on Super Topo, I decried the incredibly ugly profusion of high-density developments creeping ever closer to the park.

Well, a far more extensive and ominous threat now looms, a massive 7,000 house development on Blue Diamond Hill, literally on the edge of the park. Please have a look at the threads on Super Topo and Mountain Project for information about this issue.

I hope the spirit will move you, especially if you have enjoyed climbing at Red Rock yourself, to write to the commissioners involved in deciding the fate of Blue Diamond Hill.

Thanks Rich! I remember on a trip out there about 8 years ago thinking there was nothing stopping the builders except the park border. I guess I just didn't think it would happen so quickly!

With the many homes that are now vacant surrounding and through-out the entire L.V. region it is hard to imagine anyone getting the financial backing to move this type of project forward at the current time, but that will eventually change.

You may be right, Chip, but the immediate point is to try to prevent zoning law changes that would allow for high-density housing. Once granted the zoning exceptions, the property would pose a danger for unfortunate development forever.

I think it is important for the commissioners to see that concern about this kind of development is not simply local, and that potential tourist dollars are involved as well. That's why I posted here---out of state voices are important.

Current zoning law for that area: 1 house per 2 acres.

I heard Kent is threatening to block the highway out to the cliffs if the zoning is changed . . . .
