The Climbing cover shot is Jim Waugh on Ma'adim 5.11c, Reef of Rocks, Mt. Lemmon, AZ. Photographer: Peter Noebels.

It's a wonderful shot that really shows off a beautiful line. So few magazine covers have captured a route as well as that one does.

80's? How about some vintage 50's wear. An early ascent of Foops.

Here is a shot on Roger's Rock this past July. It was one of those high 90 degree days with oppresive humidity. Man was it nice to canoe out, take a swim, climb the rock, take a swim and canoe back.

Wow, I love that 50s Sports Illustrated cover! Where'd you get your hands on that?

I guess its a sad commentary on the loss of climbing access to Skytop that McCarthy aiding Foops in '58 now shows up in the Non-Gunks Photo Du Jour. I can remember when Foops was actually in the Gunks...

rg: yeah, I knew it didn't belong in the thread but I posted anyway following the magazine cover theme Les had put up. In hind sight... you have a good point, I guess it really is a "non-Gunk's" photo

"Infamous" is probably closer to the truth. I read the newsletter also, and it didn't sound much like the climb I was on.

I only heard about one death while I was on the mountain (a Spanish guy, of pulmonary edema, tried to self-evacuate), and seven cases of severe frostbite (will lose digits).

It was a pretty bad storm; exposed a large number of people as "in over their heads." We saw a tent get blown away--went sailing off the ridge--at high camp. How could you set up a tent in 50 mph winds and NOT put something heavy on the tent floor when you spread it out? The whole tent body--poles and all, everything except the fly--went sailing.
