Viagra Might Cause Sudden Hearing Loss

by John Wolper 14:11, October 22nd 2007

FDA decided that entire class of PD-5 medications would bear an extra warning on their label about the possible risk of suffering sudden hearing loss when under treatment.
FDA especially refers to impotence drugs, such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra and Revatio, a drug for pulmonary hypertension.

Viagra and Revatio is manufactured by Pfizer and Cialis by Eli Lilly. Levitra it was developed by GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer HealthCare and is jointly promoted by GSK and Schering-Plough Corporation in the United States.

According to FDA, all manufacturers have agreed to display on their products’ label ‘more prominently the potential risk of sudden hearing".

The FDA began its investigation of a possible link between sudden hearing loss and PD-5 drugs after the publication of an article in the last April about a man who experienced sudden hearing loss after taking Viagra.

FDA ear nose and throat specialist Dr. Robert Boucher discovered 29 reports of sudden hearing loss in case of Viagra intake. These reports date since 1996, when Viagra started to be marketed.

There are over 40 millions of prescriptions for the four drugs that will have the sudden hearing loss risk warning on their labels. The other three drugs contain a similar active substance with Viagra.

FDA spokeswoman Rita Chappelle, told CNN that the 29 cases of sudden hearing loss are a number relatively small, ‘but because we're talking about a person's ability to hear, we thought it was important to make the label clear that this is a possible event".

Viagra had already a mention on its label of a hearing loss possibility, because a few cases were reported during testing phase. But, usually hearing loss appears also within other conditions like advanced age, diabetes, heart disease, smoking. Some of these also lead to impotence, so when in Viagra treatment and these conditions are also present, it isn’t clear that only Viagra triggers sudden hearing loss.

Boucher told CNN: "We don't know enough to say that it's ironclad caused by the drugs, but we see enough to say we can't ignore it either". He also added: "This is basically a public health announcement to let people decide if they want to take the drug".

FDA recommended that man that take the impotence treatment drugs and experience sudden hearing loss should immediately stop taking them. However, patients taking Revatio and experiencing hearing loss should not stop their treatment, because it could be life-threatening, but there are advised to contact their doctor immediately.

What the FDA doesn't get is that Pfizer is calling sudden deafness as a feature, not a side effect.

Imagine a poor slob, forty years into a miserable marriage ... suddenly, not only can he get it up, but when his wife starts complainin about her headache and all the chores he should be doing, he hears none of it. Bliss!

Viagra perks up plants: How impotence drug can revive drooping flowers

By Tamara Cohen

Last updated at 11:12 AM on 19th January 2012

Keeping cut flowers perky for longer is probably the last thing a man taking Viagra would think of.

But the drug designed to help revive his love life can have the same effect on a wilting bouquet.
Apparently just one milligram of Viagra can give cut flowers another week of life.
Giving the plants a boost: Viagra could spruce up flowers by giving them a new lease of life for an extra week
Perk up: 'You only need a small amount of Viagra to stiffen up flowers'
Men nursing concerns about their sexual performance may not be terribly excited about this discovery.

Nevertheless, there may be some couples - perhaps of a certain age - who are more excited about the drug's horticultural application than its principal use.

The handy tip comes from TV gardener David Domoney, who declares: 'You only need a tiny amount of Viagra to stiffen things up nicely.'

'Just 1mg - there are 50mg in a single tablet - dissolved into water with your plants will make them last a week longer.'

He says nitric oxide, the chemical in the drug which relieves impotence by relaxing the muscles on blood vessels, causing them to dilate, also slows down the dying process in plants.

Mr Domoney adds 'Now scientists are working on ways to market a gardeners' version of Viagra for plants. Soluble aspirin also works in the same way, too. Put one tablet into some wilting flowers and the effervescence will prolong their life.'

Scientists in Australia originally discovered Viagra's plant preserving qualities and the research was published in the British Medical Journal, which said: 'Viagra can double the shelf life of cut flowers.'

Too bad it cant be used to "perk up" some of these threads......The original MohonkPreserveNeighborsAssociation thread is seeing plenty of action with over 40,000 views. We're not sure who has that much stamina but its pretty clear that its not due to Viagra! Thanks for viewing. MPNA

Seriously? Posting this in multiple threads? Remember that robots don't actually read a web page.
