Alright...I'll say it. My C3's are a poor replacement for my beloved, but potentially headless, Aliens..

Has anyone actually used the new Fixe Aliens? I liked them at Rock n' Snow but have heard few field reports.

Yes, they are great. I replaced my blue and it's pretty much identical except that its a little less stiff or shall I say flaccid? At $80 each I will only slowly be replacing the other colors.

Yeah I got a blue Fixe and it's an Alien, just like old times.

I have a full set of the Totem Basic Cams, I love them.

Dude,

What don't you like about the C3's?

Oh, different question altogether.

I threw out my Aliens long before the issues since I destroyed them on a yearly basis given the soft aluminum. They would keep mushrooming over and I'd keep filing the burrs off until I couldn't anymore. The C3's fit where nothing else works, they are smooth as butter and insert like a syringe, and I've taken countless 30fters onto the green 0 (atleast 10 on one route alone), and the purple 00 with them working with ease, and have only taken short falls onto the 000. The head width also gives them options to place where nothing else goes being atleast 20% narrower then the aliens.

I'm with Chas; C3's beat Aliens, especially in the Gunks, where head width can make all the difference between getting something in and having nothing. The only Alien that is still useful is the green one, because it fills an unfortunate gap in the C3 sizing.

(Full disclosure: I still have Aliens on my rack besides the green one, 'cause I own them and I haven't sprung for a double set of C3's. But having both makes the superiority of C3's evident.)

(More disclosure: in the two sizes above a yellow C3, the best cams are the blue and yellow Totems---not the Totem Alien copies, the real Totem cams. Actually, I think all the Totem cams are the best cams in their sizes.)

I still use C3's but they just never seem to fit anywhere as well as the Aliens did esp. in the Gunks... I think there's something about the flexible stem too that somehow just felt more secure when testing a particular placement.

I'll give the guinea pigs another year or so to run and see if any problems crop up.

Go with totem basics. Cheaper and better made imo. I did get the fixe black and blue because totem doent make those sizes. Cant go wrong ive taken a couple falls on them and they seem no worse for wear. Placing them inspires. c3s have there place as well, im just not a huge fan

The general opinion is that Totem Basics are better. In addition to better "fit and finish," the heads are narrower in each size. Have a look at http://www.mountainproject.com/v/totem-vs-fixe-aliens/107710759 for more information and comparison photos.

Does Rock and Snow carry the Totem Cams? They sound good.

As far as Aliens vs. C3's:

I like the aliens because the four cams keep them from walking, especially in horizontals. Also I seem to find a lot of booty C3's and not as many aliens. I think the C3's get stuck easier due to the walking issue. On the C3's defense they do fit in places that the aliens don't.

I now carry the three smallest C3's and aliens to red and if it's a scary route I haven't been on before I also carry the blue/black, blue/green, and green yellow hybrid aliens. It may sound like overkill but by racking the overlap sizes on the back of my harness they don't take up much space and don't weigh much. I think one of my greatest fears in climbing comes from getting run-out and then not having the right gear for the one crack that presents itself.

Sounds like I will now have to start carrying a set of totems too!

Totem Cams, not the Totem Alien versions, are arguably the best medium-size cams made. And the most expensive at about $80 a pop or $72 each for five or more. They are gaining a substantial following---see http://www.mountainproject.com/v/totem-cams/107938119 which has links to other reviews, http://andy-kirkpatrick.com/blog/view/one_cam_to_rule_them_all , http://davidallfrey.blogspot.com/2011/09/totem-cams-aid-review.html ,
http://blog.oregonlive.com/climbing/2010/10/climbing_gear_review_totem_cam.html .

Rock and Snow had them for a while but stopped carrying them because Totem wouldn't sell at a reasonable wholesale price. You can order direct from Totem; that's how I got mine. http://www.totemcams.com/ .
