So it's that time of year again, there was a large brush fire west of the ridge last saturday. I am politely reminding climbers, etc who smoke cigarettes to please be careful. thank you!

I had read in The Freeman that it was a "controlled" burn of some sort that got out of control.......anyone know the details about the origin?

Sounds like someone burning trash illegally, supposedly charges will be filed. controlled burns are restricted from 3-15 to 5-15(at least in Rochester).And its not cool to burn plastic recyclables anytime neighbors!

The NY state wide fire ban is supposed to end on May 15. Properly permitted controlled burns are not date resricted as per the state's 2009 legislation.
Burning leaves,garbage, trash, plastics etc., are also banned year round under NYS code.

on my permit it states "There is no burning allowed in New York State under a DEC permit between: march 15th-may 14th"
also "Leaves may only be burned if they are attached to branches"

Authorizations for prescribed burns are on a case by case basis. Here is a youtube vid of the recent prescribed burn at the MP this past March and covered by the local print media as well. With multiple agencies involved, trained foresters, rangers, and crew of additional volunteers on hand the preserve has cautiously held a number of these burns over the past few years. Some during the general state wide ban.
