I returned yesterday from Bariloche, Argentina, and the climbing was spectacular.

Friday, I climbed at the local crag with the Argentine Army mountain school. Granite outcrops, called Piedras Blancas, with top roping. The school (mostly through the efforts of a U.S. Army exchange instructor) has installed anchor bolts at the tops of most routes, as these climbs are well used and the rock is difficult to protect, with few handy trees or cracks at the tops.

You can get to these from Bariloche via a dirt road, any type of vehicle, in about 30 minutes from downtown.

Saturday, we went via 4WD to Refugio Lopez, at the center of Cerro Lopez, a granite/schist massif west of Bariloche. We took the vehicle to save time, as I only had a few days to climb. It's a 40 minute drive versus three or four hour hike. From the refugio, it is an hour approach to several climbs. On Saturday, we climbed the northern peak. The route starts at the patch of snow and goes straight up the crack. At the ridgeline, it traverses left to the summit. It's about 7 pitches, rated 5.7, but I think it was more like 5.6 with perhaps two 5.7 moves. Quite beautiful, and the views were spectacular. It stays in shadow all day long, which makes me think that it's probably a spectacular ice line in the winter.

On Sunday, we climbed the southern peak of Cerro Lopez. The route takes the crack furthest to the left in the photo, to about halfway up, then traverses to the next crack system to the right. It was seven pitches of sustained 5.8, with a few 5.9 moves. Very vertical and very exposed. About 3/4 of the way up, as I was following up to the belay, we heard this swishing noise and looked down to see an adult male condor sailing by underneath us. No photo (my hands were full!) but his wingspan was at least 3 meters. You can tell the male by the white markings on the tops of the wings, and the white crest. Spectacular.
