History Fun - 03/03/06 03:10 AM

Since this board has been a little dead lately, I thought Id stir the pot...

I love the Gunks and its history but unfortunately missed the times when the FA's were going up. So I was wondering if any of you out there had any fun stories, anecdotes, or the like from climbing with or knowing any of the greats: Stannard, McCarthy, Williams, Barber,...

Maybe its an FA story, maybe its something you learned from them, maybe its something that impressed you, whatever.

If you have none of the above, maybe just share a story of your own.

Cheers,
Ross

Kansas City: Kevin Bien hated falling off Kansas City because he was afraid of swinging into the tree, and Sandy Stewart came to the conclusion that he would need to start doing finger tip pull ups over a door lintel in his house. If my memory serves me correct, I am pretty sure Mark Robinson did the second ascent.

Matt Muchnick did the second free ascent.

Yep. As Matt stood over the lip after a variety of folks placed gear, he asks Kevin, "What do I do now?" Kevin answers, "Jump" and he does.

Curmudgeon, during that same mid '70s time frame, who was the fellow who started wearing very tight Totes on his feet rather than conventional climbing shoes on Kansas City so as to better use his feet?

Ricky, I don't know who that was.

The strangest shoes I recall from the 70's were worn by the Russian speed climbing team who visited the Gunks. They had weird stitched up homemade climbing shoes made from innertube thickness rubber.

For Kansas City I used the one bare foot, one climbing shoe method!

Same period of time, thin fellow from Jersey or PA. Stretched those small Totes tite over his feet. Looked painful, but effective.

Sounds like it might be Jeff Gruenberg aka "Jersey Jeff" or "Bones"?
