Campground to be Discussed at 10/16 Meeting - 10/15/12 03:19 PM

I have been told by a local from Gardiner who is involved with their politics that the new campground is going to be discussed at the Gardiner Planning Board meeting tomorrow evening - Tuesday, October 16th, 2012.

The topic is Item Number 7 on the Agenda linked here:
http://www.townofgardiner.org/PBAgenda.cfm

As can be guessed, there is expected to be vocal opposition to the campground. Please do your best to attend this meeting and voice your opinions. Also, please help in getting the word out to your network. This is very short notice, so we need to work quickly.

Meeting Time:7:30PM

Gardiner Town Hall Location: 2340 Rt. 44/55, Mail: P.O. Box 1, Gardiner, NY 12525

After 6+ years of efforts by the town and residents of Gardiner to stonewalled the current plan, the likely success rate is approaching zero to build this in Gardiner.

I think it's time for MP and Minnewaska to reconsider options within their own boarders on the ridge away from residences if they still wish to pursue this. There are a few suitable locations on the ridge that are far from pristine and have had major development in the past (far greater impact than any campground could ever do) Of course the environmental groups (funded in part by those same residences) would again fight such a move as not conforming to the mission statement of the parks, or disrupting the 'natural balance' (what ever that is)

Its shame, but if you live away from the Gunks, it's clear that the local communities (with an exception of NP) do not want you or your money here.

Why has no one proposed building it on the existing MUA footprint?

Hi Mike.

Respectful organizations and people are very welcome. Disrespectful organizations and people are not. The MP and many of their members have unfortunately been very disrespectful over the years, and so are not welcomed by many.

Or for that matter, why don't they build it elsewhere on the MP's 7000 acres of land? It seems they don't want any development anywhere else on their land and so better to put the campground development in amongst other development, no matter how incompatible it may be with the neighborhood. And relationships with those neighbors be damned.

As for whether or not it will be built, at this point I think it will be. The planning board presentation is informational only. The PIPC is invoking their sovereign authority and ignoring all local zoning laws, or whichever ones they want to anyway. The town can file suit to challenge that but has no money to do so, nor is the political will on the town board sufficient to do so.

PIPC is putting campground construction out to bid and it will be built. And it will possibly be another perennial point of conflict between the MP and their neighbors. It will be yet another example of the MP's bullying tactics.

Even though it is PIPC, not MP, doing the bullying.

It is fantastic to hear that the campground is going to be built, the sooner the better. I think that the AAC plan is really great, a central fire pit and pavillion for cooking and staying out of the rain. It's going to be a lot of fun for visiting climbers to have a place to stay that is walking distance from the cliffs, is clean, well organized and relatively cheap; awesome!

any report from the meeting? was it a whitewash or was feedback solicited?

A campground is needed but neighbors need a reasonable say in the project

The meeting was intended to be informational, with the preserve simply updating the board on development as a courtesy. Board members did ask a few questions, and took some time to review notes from previous meetings.

One person asked to address the board, and did so, as did two others (one of which was myself).

From what I have been told, it seems that the preserve has had meetings with neighbors, and from what I gather, reasonable input has absolutely been accepted.

From the meeting, the status is that the preserve is hoping to send out a request for bids in the upcoming month or so, and hopes to begin work next spring.

Any idea why the MP is taking bids and not the PIPC?

It may very well be that the PIPC is the one taking the bids. It was representatives from the preserve at the meeting, but perhaps they are simply speaking on behalf of the three groups involved in the project. At any rate - I would guess that whomever is taking the bids is doing to because those groups agreed to handle it that way!

If I had to guess, I imagine that the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation will issue the RFP but it is not on their webpage yet.
