The Mountain Bistro has closed!

The Mountain Bistro has closed! - 04/11/14 06:35 AM

In a bit of heartbreaking news, I arrived this past weekend in New Paltz early on a Sunday, belly empty, looking forward to double breakfast burritos at the Bistro (next to EMS, across from the Brauhaus) and to my (and my hunger pains') dismay, my normal go-to breakfast place in New Paltz was no more. Shuttered, kaput, finito.

Anybody want to recommend a new sandwich place in town?

Something with quick service and huge sandwiches would be ideal.

Don't you think it is likely another will take over that place?

Again?

I heard the inside is empty - no note of explanation on door....so looks like it is really closed. I haven't heard anything though.

It would be great if someone DOES come in, but if they do, they would be silly not to take the time to do some refurbishing before opening.

The deli in Gardiner on Main Street is very good. Yummy sandwiches and other items. If coming up from the south, it's on the way.

In town, The Bakery is good and the long lines will make you feel right at Bistro home!

Those pesky taxes...they really get in the way of doing business.

I second the deli in Gardiner...it's very good.

Main Street Bistro in New Paltz is my mainstay, I keep them on speed dial. Lines are insane there, but if you phone ahead the takeout is usually ready.

Karma Road is also an option, too, but prices are a little on the side of Manhattan and I'm not sure if they are open early enough.

There's also a Subway in the plaza on the left as you enter the downtown region. A bagel store is on the right (coming from Thruway) in the Stop & Shop plaza.

Again?
Well, Jack's Deli in New Paltz makes decent sandwiches. It is on the right a few doors down from Mexicali Blue if coming from the Thruway. He also sells local grassfed beef and other meats.

No matter how good the restaurant/takeout places are in New Paltz and Gardiner, they are no substitute for the proximity of that deli.

Yeah, proximity. I like the Chelsea motel in Kerhonksen, and it's a long way to go all the way back to NP for stuff.

I'm sure it'll be back open soon enough.

I heard that a new person has come in and will again have a deli.

today I was hanging out at the picnic tables waiting for my van to be worked on at Beeks, and some electrical contractors were doing something inside. But I don't know what, or if it is related to a new business coming in.

There were also plenty of people who drove in not knowing it was closed. Probably at least one every ten minutes. Best of luck to the new proprietor for a successful venture!

That deli sucked balls for a number of years. I stopped going there somewhere around 2005 or 2006. Lines too long, service sucked, food too expensive, and not a good selection. And to clarify a point...it is NOT in New Paltz. It's in Gardiner. Convenient Deli makes a good egg sandwich, and quick and easy lunch sandwiches. They are fast, and inexpensive. In the same parking lot with Dedricks Pharmacy. The deli in Gardiner is WAAAAY overpriced.

Russo's in np is the bomb imo.
I really hope the last bite gets the mountain bistro location. fingers crossed.

Has The Last Bite been working on a deal? They would be a great new proprietor, though of course High Falls would be sadder for their absence(assuming they would close that location).

+1 for the deli sucking balls - $3 for a peanut-butter bagel served by some snotty kid that took 20 minutes? Same price gets me a fatty egg sandwich from the convenient deli, plus coffee, served by the friendly and honest folks - left my wallet there once and they returned, not short a buck.

Been climbing in the Gunks for nearly 20 years and went into the deli 3 or 4 times at most. Everything was always overpriced, not very good and service was very slow.

That's three posters above who complained about the place. Yet RangerRob noted too long lines there. It doesn't take a brilliant mind to conclude that a well run place could be quite successful.

I agree the business could be successful.

One thing I would love to see there would be smoothies and fresh juices.

I think having picnic snack packs premade and available to be custom made, prepaid and ready for pick up would be a smart idea during the season.

I'll miss going there to buy $1.50 semi cold cans of coke (when in stock).

I stopped in regularly after Sunday's trail crew session. Never waited on line, food was good, but hell, no one ever sucked balls. How did I miss out on that? Damn, must have been a crowd pleaser during the morning rush.

"but hell, no one ever sucked balls"

Silly metaphor, isn't !t!

I noticed a \"Coming Soon!\" sign at the place last night, and the door was open with people working inside. In the quick glance I had driving past, I didn\'t see any fixtures/furniture in there, so how \"soon,\" I couldn\'t say, but will try to stop in if I see the door open again and ask.

I got breakfast at the new \"mountain harbor deli\" yesterday. Not really sure where the harbor part is coming from. I got 2 eggs and double bacon on a hero a 20oz coke and a banana. It was about $7.50. An insane (meaning perfect) amount of bacon on the sandwich. Pretty standard wait time. Overall pretty happy, but it was 8am, and there were about 6 people in there. not the 9:15 mobscene i remember from the old deli.

Re: The Mountain Bistro has closed! - 09/16/14 01:02 PM

\"Harbor\" I guess like a port of call, safe place to hold up, replenish, etc.
I also have found as of late, the service to be good, serving sizes more than adequate and priced competitively.
I\'ll drop anchor there anytime.

So, same place? Do they still have the same sandwiches? Their Mountain Woman is/was my favorite breakfast sandwich anywhere.

Many of the same sandwiches. If your fav isn\'t on the menu, they\'ll make it as you wish. If the grill is off for the day, they have an additional electric grill for those late day hot sandwich orders. The whole tenor of the new staff is to please.
