Is that the smear on East crag that rarely comes in? I TRd it a couple of years ago an thought it was excellent.

Yup, that's it. It was indeed a blast. I laybacked the thick ice at the top with my gloved hand because it was so detached. (Well, Ok just a bit, until I got a bomber moss stick above it)

The whole place started from zero last Sunday. Someone I know was in there recently and said forgettaboutit. Might be something to tap at this weekend but I could not imagine any heavy slaying of ice going on.

If you wanna get your wussy arms into shape for DF give me a shout and we can go ice hunting sat, sunday I'm sure I'll be diggin the driveway out of a billzion inches of snow.

I might bring my dual, horizontal front point crampons this w/e. (what does that tell you?)

And my old picks.

If you climb this weekend in the catskills bring your balls and leave your long screws at home.

Think november conditions. No snow, thin ice, and thinner topouts. What looks good from the road looks thin from the base, and thinner at the topouts.

That's not to say things can't be climbed, they just can't be protected unless things change from last night to the weekend (which is entirely possible). Your best bet would be to give everything a week to build and enjoy the long weekend next weekend. If it stays cold conditions will improve quickly with the snow coming sunday.

If you do head out, please be kind to the ice.

Re: Yes Virginia, there IS ice in the Catskills this week - 02/12/06 11:24 PM

Well, I drove up to Hunter today... not one of my smarter moves, but I survived the drive up despite having snow billow up from the road onto my windshield

There was lightning before dawn, around 6:30AM. Wild.

I took a glance at Asbestos Pass on the way out, without actually stopping the car. It looks like it's trying hard to form back up, but I didn't see anything that was what I'd call climbable, at least not leadable. The stream didn't look solid either.

What, you see a picture of Rawdon and assume it's Moore's bridge?

Forget sir screw a lot, he should be called the Mayor of Moore's...or maybe Othello.

And yes, I do mean this week. Here's a look at the 3rd (top) pitch of Hillyer Falls today. The ice was great... the approach sucked, as always.

Of course, what Mike's NOT mentioning is that if you want to climb for more than 5 moves you have to do s sit-start.

Re: Yes Virginia, there IS ice in the Catskills this week - 03/19/06 07:52 PM

Yeah, but that's 5 moves more than I've climbed in almost two weeks! I hope to get up north tomorrow to get a fix, boredom is setting in in a big way. It's gotten so bad, I've even gone to the gym!

Well the second pitch (below) had to be at least 7 moves long.

Re: Yes Virginia, there IS ice in the Catskills this week - 03/19/06 10:38 PM

Seven moves, eight - whatever it takes.

Uh oh, Harry's getting bored, and he's not even at the base of the climbs yet... could be interesting.

Re: Yes Virginia, there IS ice in the Catskills this week - 03/21/06 01:32 AM

Didn't get all that bored, stuck with normal climbs.

Suffice it to say, yes virginia, there's ice in the adirondacks as well.

Sure didn't feel like the first day of spring at the north face of pitchoff today.

Discovery of the day:
If you can't drink your frozen Red Bull, cut the top of the can off with your ice tool, it makes an enjoyable slushy.

Harry, you're on a tight budget and need to reconsider this on-the-wagon thing: Red Bull is 'way more expensive than beer. But Dennis thanks you for the tip; he has begun supplementing his regular excessive consumption of coffee with 16-oz. cans of Red Bull. He calls it "RB" and claims that it really stands for "Roaring Brook."
