Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 03:32 AM
Well, I thought I'd give this a whirl, Guess the ice route!
Keep in mind anything that Mike R posts will be easy to Guess. I already claim credit for guessing his correctly, Moore's and more Moore's. And to RangerRob, sorry about cluttering up the ice discussion with ski talk, maybe this picture can serve as my way of saying, "I'm sorry" I'll keep it free of snow from now on.

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 01:55 PM
Its the Catskills, Looking at the sun angle I'd guess something in the hillsides of Katterskill Falls?
Not much to go on.

I think Smike has gleaned all I could as well.

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 02:53 PM
sun angle? SUN ANGLE? WTF Sun Angle? I dont see a single defined shadow. just a black outline of a climber and a hill in the background.
WTF Katterskill Falls. got anything else to pull out of your arse?

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 04:31 PM
Yes, Kaaterskill Clove, I think you can see tree shadows on the hillside. Anyway, here are bigger hints...

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 04:37 PM
Evan, you're as good at reading a photo as you are a map.
That ridge in the background is getting full noon-ish sun (so given the suns aspect in winter it must be a hill side facing South East)
Also mts in the catskills have a generally flat top, with steep hillsides with a mix of confer trees on the steep parts

Nice, Gottlieb's roof (P1)

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 05:38 PM
If this guess the ice route is going to work the pics need to give a bit more context. the characteristics of rock don't change, generally. Holds stay the same, color, shape and texture all contribute to us being able to recognize a rock route given a very small snapshot of the route. Ice I don't think will work that way. I think they need to be a bit wider and give the overall shape of the flow, the rock behind it, hillsides in the distance, tree types, etc.
Posted by: cfrac
Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 06:02 PM
It might not work, but I'm bored, I have tendonitis and there is no snow or ice.
Gottlieb's Roof is Right!!!

Like I said, Goldie Hawn. After all, she was a football coach in the movie Wildcats and where does a coach stand? On the sidelines. Where is this climb? On the side(lines) of Wildcat. Pretty obvious.

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 11:17 PM
That's one of the corners on left side of Moore's right?
I mean Moore's, right?
By the way the Wildcat guess was right for any who were not sure, the left variation on the last pitch.
Flight 98 looks great, never did it. It looks like the right variation would be wild, thin to mixed back to hangers on the right!

Chapel Pond area is correct, but what climb? Sorry for not sticking to the catskills. If you want to trek up to flight 98, have fun. I'm not going back...unless it's for something else in the general vicinity.

And the route is very foreshorten looking in this image.

Not Moores. Though last March a similarly steep pillar showed up briefly around that west side. It was much thinner than this one though and we only TR'ed it. I wish I took a photo of it - it was just a couple inches thick at its base.
Honestly, I don't know why you guys think every photo I post is something at Moores Bridge. Really, I don't understand.

PS this one isn't in the guidebook, so we're looking for a location rather than a route name. And I don't know if it forms like this regularly. So maybe "you had to be there" (last year).

Underwood Canyon? I don't know many of the names, but something like three stooges or one of the recommended routes on the East side?

Only a few places can looked that hacked up, and one of them is the hell hole. (Left side). (I don't care what they try to call it these days

Nice to see someone still leads it.

That baby was making some interesting noises and had water pouring down it when I was thinking about doing it last year. Sweet looking line but too much sun that day. Nice one!

Don't ask why I'm here instead of out climbing ice but...
Yes that was our take on the route as well, at least at that time; however it is generally referd to as the Coleman Headwall on Mt. Baker (WA)

Too much going on... OK, the one that I posted is on the left side of Wildcat Falls next to tier 1 or 2 I can't remember. May have been a FA I don't know.
AOC, you said an easy one? I don't know Adarondike? or something in Smuggs?
Mike R's post, it kind of look like Chapel Pond Canyon. On the way down to Positive Reinforcement???
Did it two (or maybe three) years ago...that flared crack at the top was a b*tch, let me tell you...
