Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 03:32 AM

Well, I thought I'd give this a whirl, Guess the ice route!
Keep in mind anything that Mike R posts will be easy to Guess. I already claim credit for guessing his correctly, Moore's and more Moore's. And to RangerRob, sorry about cluttering up the ice discussion with ski talk, maybe this picture can serve as my way of saying, "I'm sorry" I'll keep it free of snow from now on.

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 01:55 PM

Its the Catskills, Looking at the sun angle I'd guess something in the hillsides of Katterskill Falls?

Not much to go on.

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 02:49 PM

I think Smike has gleaned all I could as well.
Posted by: empicard

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 02:53 PM

sun angle? SUN ANGLE? WTF Sun Angle? I dont see a single defined shadow. just a black outline of a climber and a hill in the background.
WTF Katterskill Falls. got anything else to pull out of your arse?
Posted by: cfrac

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 04:31 PM

Yes, Kaaterskill Clove, I think you can see tree shadows on the hillside. Anyway, here are bigger hints...

Posted by: Smike

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 04:37 PM

Evan, you're as good at reading a photo as you are a map.

That ridge in the background is getting full noon-ish sun (so given the suns aspect in winter it must be a hill side facing South East)

Also mts in the catskills have a generally flat top, with steep hillsides with a mix of confer trees on the steep parts

Nice, Gottlieb's roof (P1)

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 05:38 PM

If this guess the ice route is going to work the pics need to give a bit more context. the characteristics of rock don't change, generally. Holds stay the same, color, shape and texture all contribute to us being able to recognize a rock route given a very small snapshot of the route. Ice I don't think will work that way. I think they need to be a bit wider and give the overall shape of the flow, the rock behind it, hillsides in the distance, tree types, etc.
Posted by: cfrac

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 06:02 PM

It might not work, but I'm bored, I have tendonitis and there is no snow or ice.

Gottlieb's Roof is Right!!!
Here's a pic from above...

Just because it didn't work for you, you have to dumb it down for the rest of us?

Yep, I do. You just happened to guess correctly! You have to admit, the picture above is a lot nicer to examine

Yes, the picture above is nicer to look at but I think that photo is too easy. OK, here's another one...oh yeah, Thanks Smike!

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/02/09 11:06 PM

Oh man, too easy. I will not say this time,(Give someone else a chance) but it's just to the left of a super nice 110' pitch of moderate grade 4 ice (the last pitch of ... ) smirk

How about Goldie Hawn? Yes, an obscure reference but does this climb have a real name?

Agreed. Pretty obvious to anyone who's done it. Or at least to anyone who's done it more than once. Props for leading it!

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 10:34 AM

Like I said, Goldie Hawn. After all, she was a football coach in the movie Wildcats and where does a coach stand? On the sidelines. Where is this climb? On the side(lines) of Wildcat. Pretty obvious.

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 01:52 PM

Another fairly easy one:

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 02:20 PM

Easy? Even the guidebook author admitted he never climbed this one. Flight 98.

I'm new to this forum. Had no idea Pitfall was you, Harry.
Posted by: Mike Rawdon

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 05:33 PM

Heh, that one (Flight 98) wasn't easy. I thought it might have been some unusual formation of a 2nd pitch in Stoney Clove, but the rock didn't look right.

Another:

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 11:17 PM

That's one of the corners on left side of Moore's right?
I mean Moore's, right?
By the way the Wildcat guess was right for any who were not sure, the left variation on the last pitch.
Flight 98 looks great, never did it. It looks like the right variation would be wild, thin to mixed back to hangers on the right!

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 11:19 PM

Okay, so this is harder than I thought. When I figure out how to post a picture on here I will get some up.

Looks like Moores, but I don't believe it is. Something closer to Chapel Pond, perhaps?
Posted by: pitfall

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/03/09 11:32 PM

Chapel Pond area is correct, but what climb? Sorry for not sticking to the catskills. If you want to trek up to flight 98, have fun. I'm not going back...unless it's for something else in the general vicinity.

Bizzz and Bizzz.. Hint: in most years a Tree start is required, as was the case in this photo, as the bottom curtain is usually crap.

And the route is very foreshorten looking in this image.

Re: Guess the Ice Route - 11/04/09 07:49 PM

I usually avoid tree starts unless the route is the dead tree in the front yard.

This is not off Peekamoose Rd though I've seen those and thought the same thing. We did get the roof, the crack was a little flared, the climbing was either M6 or M7. Here are a couple more pics...

It's not Buttermilk, but I think I know the route you mean...the pitch just left of the last pitch on Buttermilk looks very similar but has a smaller roof and a steeper intro.

The route in question was climbed last year and isn't too far from Buttermilk.

Not Moores. Though last March a similarly steep pillar showed up briefly around that west side. It was much thinner than this one though and we only TR'ed it. I wish I took a photo of it - it was just a couple inches thick at its base.

Honestly, I don't know why you guys think every photo I post is something at Moores Bridge. Really, I don't understand. wink

PS this one isn't in the guidebook, so we're looking for a location rather than a route name. And I don't know if it forms like this regularly. So maybe "you had to be there" (last year).

I don't think Mike's is in the canyon. I think it's that thing down around to the right of Crystal Ice Tower, can't remember the name?

It's just above the pond maybe 100 yd left of Lions.

And Al's is indeed in Avy. Pass.

Now that you stated it Smike I see it. It seems so obvious now!

So Mike R, is your route in the guidebook, does it have a name?
and I will check out Viola, sounds good!

Avalanche Mt. Gully is correct. I thought the brown ice would be a give away.

I was stumped too. I didn't recognize myself in the photo. Short but strenuous.

Underwood Canyon? I don't know many of the names, but something like three stooges or one of the recommended routes on the East side?

Stooges is correct. Curly center and Larry (Fine) on the right.

Only a few places can looked that hacked up, and one of them is the hell hole. (Left side). (I don't care what they try to call it these days smirk )

Nice to see someone still leads it.

That baby was making some interesting noises and had water pouring down it when I was thinking about doing it last year. Sweet looking line but too much sun that day. Nice one!

Don't ask why I'm here instead of out climbing ice but...

Yes that was our take on the route as well, at least at that time; however it is generally referd to as the Coleman Headwall on Mt. Baker (WA)

AOC, you said an easy one? I don't know Adarondike? or something in Smuggs?

Mike R's post, it kind of look like Chapel Pond Canyon. On the way down to Positive Reinforcement???

Did it two (or maybe three) years ago...that flared crack at the top was a b*tch, let me tell you...
