Tree skiing at the Gunks?

Tree skiing at the Gunks? - 10/08/07 12:09 AM

I haven't taken advantage of the crosscountry skiing at the gunks yet but want to this season.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has thought of cleaning a few areas of the woods around bonticou crag for tree skiing. I don't want to see a tree or bush cut down for this. I was hiking out yesturday and noticed that alot of fallen branches have been piled up in areas that had great potential. I don't have a map or I would mention the exact locations.
Is anyone interested in this and who would we need to talk too?
Also, I think it should only be open when there is good snow and like climbing, at your own risk.

the places I'm interested in cleaning are located a little farther north.

You can ski the trees above the High Peters Kill trail on the Preserve. NO "cleaning" needed. Just park at the Coxing lot, follow the light blue trail to where it turns sharply left at the base of the slope - about 8-10 minutes walk in. Look upslope and see if you don't imagine yourself coming down that hill in a foot of fresh.

Did you XC ski at Minnewaska? I tried that for the first time last month and it was at Minne. It was a good workout in beautiful scenery.

I have been reading some trip reports on that slide - looks like a fun trip. I think we are Daks-bound this weekend, in search of slides.

No, at the Mohonk House. Spent a night there with my girl for a birthday/Anniversary and they have free cross country skiing.

That must have been a nice luxurious trip!
I won a 'ski and stay' package for 2 at the Mt. Washington Hotel. Alas we will have to wait until winter 2008-2009 to use it as there is no skiing in the lowlands until then.
